The Japan Foundation, Manila proudly announces the much-awaited return of the Japanese Film Festival (JFF) to Philippine theaters this October 2025. This year’s festival promises an exciting lineup of 12 specially curated films, blending beloved classics and acclaimed new releases. Screenings are held at SM Cinema Manila and will run until October 26, 2025, with free admission for all moviegoers.

Since its inception in 1997, JFF has become one of the most anticipated international film festivals in the Philippines, drawing over 40,000 viewers annually. It is now considered the largest Japanese film festival in the world, offering audiences a rich cinematic experience that celebrates Japanese artistry and storytelling.

The theme for JFF 2025 is “Bridging” — a concept that highlights how films can serve as metaphorical bridges connecting the past and future, technology and humanity, and individuals within a shared community. This year’s selection encourages people to build bridges instead of walls, showcasing stories that unite hearts and perspectives across generations.

Headlining the festival is the 4K remaster of Love Letter (1995), the directorial debut of Shunji Iwai. A timeless masterpiece of romance, the film has been celebrated worldwide for its poetic narrative, breathtaking snowy landscapes, and the unforgettable line, “Ogenki desu ka?” (“How are you?”). Its enduring influence resonates even in modern works like 18×2 Beyond Youthful Days (2024), a Japan–Taiwan co-production directed by Michihito Fujii.

The festival’s lineup also features a selection of masterpieces from different eras, including Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (1956), the animated classic Ghost in the Shell (1995), Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away (2001), A Samurai in Time (2024), the live-action adaptation of Cells at Work! (2024), and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom (2024), among others.

Beyond Manila, JFF 2025 will also have regional screenings at SM City Baguio, SM City Cebu (SM Lanang), and SM City Clark, with festival dates spanning from October 10 to 26. The event will culminate at SM City Manila (October 17–26), with additional special screenings at the UP Film Institute.

JFF 2025 is supported by the Film Development Council of the Philippines, JTI Philippines, Theo and Philo Artisan Chocolates, SM Cinema, and the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines. For full festival schedules, ticketing guidelines, and venue details, visit the official JFF 2025 website at http://www.japanesefilmfestph.jfmo.org.ph, or follow @jfmanila on Facebook and Instagram for updates.
