The 22nd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival sets the stage for another remarkable celebration of Filipino cinema with two internationally acclaimed independent films that explore the depth, resilience, and complexity of the Filipino experience. Opening this year’s festival is Enjoy Your Stay, a moving story of a mother’s unwavering love and sacrifice, while Filipiñana closes the festival with a compelling coming-of-age drama that uncovers hidden truths beneath privilege and power.
Together, these two acclaimed films capture the spirit of Cinemalaya 22: Reel Reflections, this year’s festival theme that shines a light on stories rooted in identity, humanity, and lived realities.
Opening Film
Directed by Dominik Locher and Honee Alipio, and co-produced by Close Up Films and JBA Production, Enjoy Your Stay tells the poignant story of Luz, a Filipina undocumented cleaner who has spent years working in Switzerland in hopes of securing a better future for her family.
Living quietly alongside fellow migrant workers, including her close friend Aileen, Luz constantly faces the fear of being discovered and deported. Her already fragile world is turned upside down when she sees her former husband and their six-year-old daughter appear on a Filipino reality television program.
Determined to reunite with the child she left behind, Luz makes an emotional promise on live television that she will return home in time for her daughter’s birthday. But with mounting debts and limited savings, she must race against time to earn enough money—even if doing so means betraying the very community that has supported her and confronting difficult moral choices.
The film features a stellar ensemble led by Mercedes Cabral, joined by acclaimed actresses Anna Luna, Hasmine Killip, Irma Adlawan, Donna Cariaga, and Madeleine Nicolas.
Following its world premiere in the Panorama section of the 76th Berlin International Film Festival on February 14, 2026, Enjoy Your Stay opens Cinemalaya with a deeply human story of migration, motherhood, and sacrifice.
The opening film will be screened free to the public on August 6, 2026 (Thursday), at 7:30 p.m., at Red Carpet Cinemas 1 and 2, Shangri-La Plaza.
Closing Film
Bringing this year’s festival to an unforgettable close is Filipiñana, directed by Rafael Manuel, a feature-length adaptation of his acclaimed 2020 short film of the same title.
The film follows Isabel, portrayed by Jorrybell Agoto, a teenage employee at an exclusive country club whose growing fascination with the club’s influential president, Dr. Palanca (played by Teroy Guzman), gradually gives way to a darker reality.
As Isabel uncovers the violence and long-buried secrets hidden beneath the country’s elite social circles, she realizes that what began as youthful admiration is deeply intertwined with a disturbing shared past.
Filipiñana made its world premiere in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition of the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, earning international recognition for its compelling storytelling and social commentary.
As the festival’s closing film, Filipiñana will be screened on August 16, 2026, at 8:30 p.m., at Red Carpet Cinemas 1 and 2, Shangri-La Plaza.
Tickets are priced at ₱350 for regular admission and ₱250 for students.

Through stories of sacrifice, resilience, identity, and social realities, the festival once again reinforces independent cinema’s unique ability to spark conversations and inspire meaningful reflection.
Admission to both the opening and closing film screenings will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, with tickets available beginning two hours before each scheduled screening.
