So, what happens when you’re diagnosed with diabetes? Will life change? Will it be hard? These are questions many Filipinos face upon learning they have a chronic condition that, when unmanaged, can lead to serious health complications.

Diabetes: A Growing Concern

The Department of Health (DOH) reports that around 4.3 million Filipinos are living with diabetes, making it one of the leading causes of death in the country. Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that diabetes claims about 1.5 million lives annually, with prevalence steadily rising in the Western Pacific region—including the Philippines.

While these numbers may seem alarming, diabetes doesn’t have to control your life. With proper education, timely medical consultation, and the right treatment, Filipinos can live long, healthy, and fulfilling lives even after a diagnosis.

Living Better, Not Just Longer

Experts from the Philippine College of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (PCEDM) emphasize that managing diabetes is possible through simple, consistent habits, guided by their IWAS: 4Dapat Diabetes Campaign:

  • Ikonsulta sa doktor – Regularly consult your doctor
  • Wastong pagkain – Maintain proper nutrition
  • Aktibong pamumuhay – Stay physically active
  • Sapat at angkop na gamot – Take prescribed medication consistently

These four pillars—early diagnosis, balanced diet, active lifestyle, and adherence to treatment—can dramatically improve life quality for those living with diabetes.

TGP and PCEDM: Advocating for Healthier Communities

To make diabetes education more accessible, The Generics Pharmacy (TGP) has partnered with PCEDM, formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement signed by TGP Deputy General Manager Aileen Natividad and PCEDM President Dr. Lora May Tan-Tin Hay.

The collaboration combines TGP’s extensive retail and community network with PCEDM’s medical expertise to strengthen nationwide efforts in diabetes awareness, prevention, and management.

“This partnership reinforces our mission to make healthcare more accessible and reliable for every Filipino,” said Natividad.
“Through this collaboration, we want Filipinos to know that life after a diabetes diagnosis is still full of hope and possibilities—with the right care, education, and support,” shared Dr. Tan-Tin Hay.

Empowering Filipinos Nationwide

The campaign will roll out across digital, in-store, and community platforms, featuring expert-led talks, health engagements, and educational content. TGP will lead advocacy efforts while amplifying PCEDM’s existing social media resources.

Launching this World Diabetes Day, November 14, the initiative encourages Filipinos to take charge of their health, embrace proactive care, and live confidently with diabetes.
