Magic Maids

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Philippinen, proudly presents Magic Maids, a compelling cultural ritual and dance performance exploring the fear, oppression, and resilience of women across centuries. Catch the performance at CCP Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez (CCP Black Box Theater) from November 7 to 9, 2025.

Conceptualized and choreographed by Eisa Jocson and Venuri Perera, Magic Maids interweaves the lived experiences of maids with the trials of witches, presenting an 80-minute narrative of feminist resistance. Through the symbolic use of the broom, the performance connects these archetypal figures, highlighting shared stories of prejudice, labor exploitation, and sacrifice—both historically and in contemporary society.

The ritualistic performance shines a light on domestic workers in the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia, drawing parallels between the exploitation of labor in the Global South and European witch hunts. Jocson and Perera, both hailing from the Global South, bring personal and cultural authenticity to this exploration of women’s oppression while celebrating resilience and empowerment.

Broomology 101 Workshop
On November 9 at 11:00 AM, Jocson and Perera will lead Broomology 101 at the TIG Lobby. The workshop transforms the broom into a tool for somatic exploration, playful transformation, and intentional movement. Participants will embody the intersection of witch and maid, exploring the spectrum of beauty and monstrosity while engaging in collective, empowering movement exercises.
