Mitski is back with her eighth studio album, Nothing’s About to Happen to Me, set to drop on February 27th via Dead Oceans. To build anticipation, she has released the album’s lead single and video, “Where’s My Phone?” The track, a fuzzed-out rock anthem, offers a glimpse into the range of sounds and energy on the album. “Where did it go // Where’s my phone // Where’s my phone // Where did I leave // Where’d I go // Where’d I go,” Mitski sings, capturing a sense of disorientation and longing.

Nothing’s About to Happen to Me immerses Mitski in a rich, captivating narrative. The album’s central character is a reclusive woman living in an untidy house. Outside, she is a deviant; inside, she is free—a space where she can confront herself. The song “Where’s My Phone?” is just the beginning, hinting at the emotional depth and varied soundscapes that will define the album.

The track is paired with a visually stunning, emotionally kaleidoscopic video directed by Noel Paul. Drawing inspiration from Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle, the video features Mitski as a paranoid woman protecting her sister in a gothic house, battling absurd and escalating human obstacles. The video employs a primitive style of filmmaking, creating a complex psychological landscape where the intruders—both menacing and friendly—build into total chaos.

Mitski wrote all the songs and performed all the vocals on Nothing’s About to Happen to Me, continuing her partnership with producer Patrick Hyland, who engineered the album, and Bob Weston, who mastered it. The album builds on the musical foundation set by her 2023 release, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We. It features live instrumentation from The Land touring band and lush orchestral arrangements. The orchestra was recorded at Sunset Sound and TTG Studios, arranged and conducted by Drew Erickson, and engineered by Michael Harris.
