MATÉO's Lalim Up for Folk Song of the Year Award

Singer-songwriter MATÉO (Matthew Ong), one of the most captivating new voices in OPM, continues to make waves as he earns a Folk Song of the Year nomination for his breakout single “Lalim” at the first-ever Filipino Music Awards (FMAs) happening on October 21, 2025, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

This milestone marks a defining moment in MATÉO’s career, underscoring his growing impact in the Filipino music scene and his role in reviving and redefining the modern kundiman — a timeless expression of Filipino love, longing, and emotion.

Released in 2024, “Lalim” began as a heartfelt serenade before capturing the hearts of listeners nationwide. The track debuted at #1 on Spotify’s Viral 50 Philippines and has since amassed over 36 million streams on the platform. His other singles — “Pinipili” (5 million streams), “Tungo” (1 million streams), and his soulful remake of the OPM classic “Bato Sa Buhangin” — have also resonated deeply with audiences. Today, MATÉO boasts over one million monthly Spotify listeners, a testament to his artistry and authenticity.

MATÉO’s musical roots trace back to Kundirana, La Salle Greenhills’ renowned music ministry that has produced Filipino music icons such as Gary Valenciano and Ogie Alcasid. A self-taught artist, MATÉO’s style blends traditional Filipino emotion with modern influences from Rey Valera, Johnoy Danao, Bruno Major, and Jacob Collier, creating a fresh sound that bridges generations.

“This nomination is incredibly humbling,” MATÉO shares. “‘Lalim’ was written from the heart as a simple serenade, and to see it embraced this way is beyond words.”

Adding to his list of achievements, MATÉO is now officially a signed artist under Korean entertainment label Abyss Company, home to global acts Sunmi, MeloMance, and Sandara Park, signaling his expansion from OPM’s rising star to an international artist to watch.

With millions of streams and an ever-growing fan base, MATÉO continues to honor Filipino heritage while connecting to a global audience through music that feels both nostalgic and new. His Folk Song of the Year nomination for “Lalim” stands as a proud celebration of modern kundiman — heartfelt, soulful, and unmistakably Filipino.
