Visionary filmmakers and creatives representing all 11 ASEAN member nations have come together to co-create a landmark cinematic tribute honoring Southeast Asian solidarity and shared cultural identity.

As the Philippines steps up to host the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2026, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is uniting the region’s artistic voices through Seas Unbroken, a commissioned cinematic music video designed to weave a collective narrative of Southeast Asia through the eyes of its people.

Brought to life by Voyage Film Studios, the creative project honors the region’s vast cultural diversity and overlapping human experiences by capturing the raw, unfiltered perspectives of local directors. Moving past conventional tourist postcards and national landmarks, Seas Unbroken deliberately shifts its lens toward the intimate rhythm of daily life—spotlighting maritime livelihoods, familial meals, vibrant urban corridors, and young generations keeping ancestral traditions alive.

The project highlights the profound power of art and media in bridging geopolitical divides, offering a platform where filmmakers can authentically represent their respective homes while contributing to a grander regional tapestry. By mobilizing a collaborative network of production crews from all 11 ASEAN member states, the initiative serves as a living testament to how creative alliances can harmonize cultural differences without flattening individual national identities.

Helmed and edited by award-winning director Chuck Gutierrez, the film is produced by Baby Ruth Villarama of Voyage Film Studios, featuring an original sweeping score composed, penned, and arranged by Von De Guzmán, with vocals delivered by Sofronio Vasquez. Together, the creative team merges disparate national viewpoints into a singular, cohesive cinematic voyage. For Gutierrez, the core artistic challenge centered on stitching these diverse global footages together while fiercely protecting the unique cultural essence that defines each participating country.

“Our seas may separate our shores, but they also connect our stories. We didn’t want to create a travelogue of Southeast Asia. We wanted to tell a human story. In the editing room, we discovered that despite our differences, the rhythms of our everyday lives are remarkably connected. The challenge was bringing these perspectives together without losing what makes each country unique,” Gutierrez said.

The production was anchored by a network of professional relationships cultivated over years among Southeast Asian filmmakers. Voyage Film Studios assembled the regional teams by uniting longtime collaborators and first-time creative partners, reflecting how such connections can evolve into meaningful alliances for producer Baby Ruth Villarama. “Everything we’ve been through as filmmakers, the challenges, friendships, and networks we’ve built across Southeast Asia for more than a decade, led us here. Many of our collaborators were people we were working with for the first time, yet everyone brought something deeply authentic to the project. It became alive, almost as though the film was breathing on its own,” Villarama said.

The film’s original song acts as a vital sonic thread, binding the diverse regional imagery together through a shared emotional landscape. Composed and penned by Von De Guzmán, the music and lyrics draw inspiration from Southeast Asia’s rich histories, overlapping cultures, and collective future aspirations, beautifully communicating how regional solidarity can seamlessly coexist alongside distinct national identities.

“With Seas Unbroken, I wanted to capture how our different histories, cultures, and identities are connected by the same seas and a shared hope for peace and prosperity. Through music and lyrics, we celebrate the strength of each nation and the greater possibilities we create together. My hope is that the song reflects not only who we are as Southeast Asians, but who we can become together,” De Guzmán said.

This creative project arrives at a historical crossroads for ASEAN, following the official integration of Timor-Leste as the bloc’s 11th member nation in 2025. As the regional alliance accelerates cross-border cooperation to shape its future trajectory, Seas Unbroken introduces a vital artistic dimension to regional identity. It beautifully balances traditional state diplomacy, international trade pacts, and political treaties with authentic, ground-level stories pulled directly from the daily lives of Southeast Asians.

For the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), commissioning this visual piece stands as a core contribution from the local arts sector to the nation’s prestigious ASEAN 2026 hosting duties. Through this initiative, cultural workers can actively engage in regional statecraft by fostering creative dialogue, elevating community representation, and sharing boundary-transcending human narratives.

Ultimately, through the collective vision of directors across 11 distinct countries, Seas Unbroken captures a Southeast Asia that is completely diverse in language, heritage, and ancestral custom, yet deeply intertwined by parallel lived experiences and shared future goals.

Eleven nations, different voices, and one shared future – told by the people who know these stories best.
