Filmmaker Darryl Yap is once again drawing public attention as past social-media posts, political exchanges, and controversies surrounding his film projects continue to generate discussion, placing his public image and filmmaking career under renewed scrutiny.

In an interview published by Cinema Bravo on October 27, 2026, Yap addressed renewed criticism over an old social-media exchange containing the phrase “Masarap ang bata.” He denied accusations of being a pedophile and explained that the original interaction had been taken out of context.

According to Yap, the exchange began when a social-media user commented that he looked young. He said his response was subsequently circulated through screenshots that, in his view, distorted its intended meaning. He also acknowledged that some of his additional remarks were no longer something he was proud of and admitted that he should have deleted the post earlier.

The interview renewed discussions about the filmmaker’s past online statements and the accountability of public figures for content that resurfaces years after its original publication.

The latest controversy comes amid a series of public disputes involving Yap, including his exchanges with government personalities, criticism of former Commission on Audit commissioner Heidi Mendoza, and the legal controversy surrounding his proposed film The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma.

RECENT EXCHANGE WITH HEIDI MENDOZA

In October 2026, Yap drew criticism after commenting on Mendoza’s defeat in the 2025 senatorial election.

In a Facebook post reported by The Global Filipino Magazine on October 22, Yap attributed Mendoza’s electoral loss to her testimony against the late Chief Justice Renato Corona during his 2012 impeachment trial.

Mendoza responded by defending her testimony and challenging Yap’s interpretation of the historical proceedings. She also cited Corona’s acknowledgment of having dollar and peso deposits that were not declared in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN).

During the impeachment trial, the Senate convicted Corona in May 2012 on the charge involving the non-disclosure of his assets.

Separately, the Sandiganbayan ruled in November 2022 that the Corona family’s assets involved in a civil forfeiture case had legitimate sources of income beyond government salaries. The decision became final in January 2023.

The two proceedings involved distinct legal questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

PEPSI PALOMA FILM TRIGGERS CYBERLIBEL CASE

One of the most significant legal controversies involving Yap emerged from The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma, a proposed film about the late actress.

On January 1, 2025, a promotional teaser featured a scene in which a character portrayed by Gina Alajar, playing Charito Solis, asked the character portraying Paloma whether Vic Sotto had raped her. The character answered affirmatively.

Sotto filed cyberlibel complaints against Yap on January 9, 2025. The Office of the City Prosecutor subsequently filed two cyberlibel counts before the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court, where Yap pleaded not guilty.

On January 24, 2025, the court ordered the removal of the 26-second teaser and related material covered by its ruling. The order did not categorically prohibit the release of the entire film.

In May 2026, Yap said the controversy had taught him to listen more closely to advice from people he trusted. However, he maintained his intention to show the film to Filipino audiences.

The latest court disposition should be verified before publication of any definitive update on the case.

SOCIAL-MEDIA DISPUTE INVOLVING CLAIRE CASTRO AND NICOLAS TORRE

Yap also figured in a public exchange involving Palace Press Officer Claire Castro and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority General Manager Nicolas Torre III in August 2026.

The dispute followed Castro’s remarks concerning teachers after a shooting incident in Tacloban. Yap took offense, citing his parents’ background as retired teachers, and directed an expletive at Castro.

Torre subsequently criticized Yap, urging him to understand Castro’s statements before reacting. Yap responded with another profane social-media post, which was later deleted, according to a Tempo report dated August 22.

The exchange generated mixed reactions online, with discussions centering on Yap’s language and the broader issue that prompted his response.

FROM POLITICAL FILMS TO A NEW HORROR PROJECT

Yap’s filmmaking career has also remained a subject of debate because of his politically charged productions.

His films Maid in Malacañang (2022) and Martyr or Murderer (2023) sparked discussions over their portrayals of the Marcos family and the final days of the Marcos presidency.

Critics questioned the films’ treatment of martial law history and human rights violations, while supporters defended them as dramatic interpretations presenting alternative perspectives.

Meanwhile, Yap has ventured into another genre through VHS (Viva Horror Stories), which opened on October 28, 2026, as part of the Sine Sindak horror film festival.

In an interview published by Cinema Bravo on October 27, Yap described the project as an attempt to explore horror through stories about Filipinos rather than focusing exclusively on monsters and supernatural elements.

He also acknowledged the challenges of working outside the comedy and drama genres associated with his previous projects.

The horror production offers another opportunity to assess Yap’s work beyond the controversies that have accompanied his public career.

THE LINO BROCKA COMPARISON

Yap’s prominence in Philippine cinema has also prompted comparisons with National Artist for Film Lino Brocka, whose works examined poverty, inequality, exploitation, and political power.

Brocka’s films, including Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag (1975) and Insiang (1976), remain important works in Philippine cinematic history because of their social themes and treatment of marginalized communities.

Yap’s filmmaking approach, meanwhile, has relied heavily on provocative storytelling, melodrama, and digital promotion to attract audiences.

The comparison has raised questions about the difference between commercial visibility and lasting artistic recognition, particularly as Yap continues to produce films dealing with politically sensitive subjects.

His appearance among the producers of Angkas, screened at Cinemalaya in August 2022, also drew reported negative reactions from some festival attendees. OneNews.PH covered the incident, distinguishing it from claims that the reaction occurred during the festival’s awards night.

While Yap has established a recognizable presence in the local entertainment industry, his long-term artistic legacy remains a subject of public discussion.

As his projects continue to reach audiences and his past statements remain part of online discourse, the filmmaker’s career reflects the increasingly interconnected relationship between cinema, politics, and social-media influence in the Philippines.
