Now in its 21st year, the Virgin Labfest (VLF) steps boldly into maturity—shedding all traces of innocence and embracing a fearless, unfiltered exploration of the Filipino voice. More than a festival, it stands as a thriving creative ground where emerging and established playwrights, directors, actors, and designers come together to push boundaries and tell stories that demand to be heard.

Guided by the evocative theme “Hubo’t Hubad,” this year’s edition dives deep into the act of revealing—of identities, truths, memories, and vulnerabilities. It challenges both artists and audiences to confront what lies beneath the surface, offering a raw and intimate look at the human condition.

From June 3 to 28, 2026, the country’s premier theater festival of untried, untested, and unstaged one-act plays returns to the Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez (CCP Black Box Theater), unveiling 12 new “virgin” scripts that pulse with urgency, honesty, and creative risk.

Unmasking the Human Experience

This year’s lineup features eight new playwrights alongside four returning voices, collectively weaving narratives that reflect the complexities of modern Filipino life.

Among the highlights is PASSWORD123, PILIPINAS321 by Anthony Kim Vergara, which navigates the murky world of cybercrime through an underground operation posing as a tech support hub. In HUMAN RIGHTS STORY OF THE YEAR by Elijah Felice Rosales, a journalist’s moment of triumph is shaken by a confrontation that questions her integrity.

Floyd Scott Tiogangco’s PATAYIN ANG MGA SUROT unfolds on the final night of a controversial presidency, blurring the line between personal and political violence. Meanwhile, Neil Arkhe Azcuna’s BALOS places moral courage under pressure inside a war-torn hospital in Marawi.

Themes of identity and belief surface in Alab Usman’s HARAM, where queer Muslims navigate love and faith, while Gab Mactal’s LUALHATI revisits a complex past between a former nun and a philosophy professor.

Other standout works include Dustin Celestino’s ELEHIYA, an emotional tapestry of father-son relationships; Ron Evangelista’s SHE’S ELECTRIC, which probes the nature of modern love; and Faith Ferrer Lacanlale’s BETAMAX, a haunting descent into psychological darkness.

Technology and grief intersect in Jerom Canlas’ FOOTPRINT, while John Lapus’ TAKSYAPO! brings two strangers together in Tarlac through shared heartbreak. Gerald Manuel’s BUHAGHAG rounds out the roster with a chilling tale of fear and self-confrontation.

Revisiting Powerful Narratives

VLFXXI also revisits three notable works from last year: POLAR COORDINATES by Ade Valenzona, THE LATE MR. REAL by Rolin Cadallo Obina, and PRESIDENTIAL SUITE #2 by Siege Malvar—each offering fresh opportunities for audiences to rediscover their layered storytelling.

A Platform for Growth and Discovery

Beyond the stage, VLF continues its mission of nurturing talent through its educational components. Staged Readings bring new scripts to life in their rawest form, while the Writing Fellowship Program mentors emerging playwrights under the guidance of acclaimed writer Glenn Sevilla Mas.

The festival also expands its global dialogue through collaborations like the Taiwan International Play Reading Festival, alongside forums such as Theater Talks and Playwrights’ Fair, where leading creatives unpack the evolving language of theater and storytelling.

A Celebration of Fearless Storytelling

With shows scheduled at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and educational events at 5 p.m., VLFXXI offers a full-day immersion into bold, boundary-pushing theater. Tickets are priced at Php800 (regular) and Php1000 (premium), available via the CCP Box Office and TicketWorld.

After two decades of shaping the Philippine theater landscape, Virgin Labfest XXI proves that the most powerful stories are those told without fear—raw, honest, and completely laid bare.
