After nearly five years away from competitive figure skating, the two-time Winter Olympian returns to the ice with a purpose that goes beyond medals: putting Philippine figure skating in the spotlight and inspiring the next generation
For Michael Christian Martinez, returning to competitive figure skating is about more than stepping back onto the ice. It is an opportunity to reignite interest in a sport that brought the Philippines onto the Winter Olympics stage—and to help inspire the next generation of Filipino athletes to dream beyond familiar sporting boundaries.
The two-time Winter Olympian is preparing to make his competitive return at the Philippine National Figure Skating Championships, scheduled for November 19 to 21, 2026, at SM Skating Mall of Asia.
His comeback marks a significant new chapter for a skater whose achievements helped introduce Filipino audiences to the demanding world of international figure skating.
But this time, Martinez is looking beyond his own competitive journey.
“I’m not just doing this for myself. I’m honestly doing this to hopefully give more attention to Philippine sports, to Philippine figure skating because I feel like we do deserve it,” he said.
His words reflect a broader ambition: to give Philippine figure skating greater visibility and encourage more young Filipinos to discover what is possible on the ice.
MORE THAN A PERSONAL COMEBACK
Returning to competition after an extended absence presents its own challenges. Figure skating demands technical precision, physical conditioning, artistry and the confidence to perform under pressure. Reaching competitive form again requires dedication and a willingness to begin another demanding chapter.
For Martinez, however, the significance of his return extends beyond the results he may achieve.
His presence at the national championships could help draw renewed attention to a sport that remains outside the mainstream of Philippine athletics. In a country where sporting conversations often center on basketball, boxing and other established disciplines, figure skating offers a different kind of athletic journey—one that combines strength, balance, discipline and artistic expression.
Martinez understands the value of visibility. When Filipino athletes compete on international stages, they do more than represent the country; they also give younger athletes a glimpse of opportunities they may never have considered for themselves.
His comeback offers another chance to bring that possibility into view.
A LEGACY THAT CAN INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION
Martinez made history as the first Filipino figure skater to compete at the Winter Olympics, participating in the 2014 Sochi and 2018 PyeongChang Games.
Those appearances established him as a pioneering figure in Philippine winter sports and demonstrated that Filipino athletes could compete in a discipline more commonly associated with countries that have established winter-sports traditions.
His return now carries the potential to reconnect that legacy with a new generation.
For aspiring skaters, seeing an accomplished Filipino athlete return to competition can serve as a reminder that sporting journeys are rarely defined by a single event or achievement. They evolve through persistence, renewed purpose and the willingness to pursue new goals.
The next generation will need more than inspiration, however. Developing Philippine figure skating also requires accessible training opportunities, sustained institutional support, coaching, facilities and pathways that allow young athletes to progress.
Greater public attention can help start that conversation.
A NEW CHAPTER ON THE ICE
The Philippine National Figure Skating Championships will provide Martinez with a competitive platform as he resumes his journey in the sport.
While the outcome of his return remains to be seen, his stated motivation already points to a goal larger than personal accomplishment: encouraging the country to pay closer attention to Philippine figure skating and the athletes working to advance it.
For Martinez, the ice is once again a place to compete—but also a platform to represent, encourage and inspire.
As he prepares for his return, the hope is that his comeback will do more than mark the return of a familiar name. It may also help open the door for young Filipinos who want to follow a similar path and see themselves represented in a sport where the Philippines still has room to grow.
Sometimes, the most meaningful part of a comeback is not simply returning to where the journey began. It is helping others imagine where their own journeys could lead.
For Michael Martinez, the next performance may be about more than skating. It may be about helping Philippine figure skating move forward.
