The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) brings another timeless opera classic to Filipino audiences as it presents Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro)—the sixth screening in The Met: Live in HD Season 10—on July 1, 2025, 5:30 PM, at Glorietta 4, Cinema 1, Makati City.
Set to Mozart’s brilliant score, Le Nozze di Figaro tells the story of the clever servant Figaro and his bride-to-be, Susanna, as they attempt to marry despite the meddling schemes of their master, Count Almaviva. A whirlwind of secrets, mistaken identities, and emotional revelations ensues, all wrapped in humor, heart, and humanity.
Drawing inspiration from Beaumarchais’s controversial play and the earlier opera Il barbiere di Siviglia, Mozart and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte crafted an opera that pushed boundaries while avoiding political controversy. Their collaboration would later give rise to more masterpieces like Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte.
Praised for its witty storytelling and vibrant ensemble pieces, Le Nozze di Figaro is considered one of the greatest operas of all time. In fact, in a 2017 BBC poll of leading opera singers, it was voted the top opera ever written.
This Met Opera production stars soprano Olga Kulchynska as the charming Susanna and bass-baritone Michael Sumuel as the quick-witted Figaro. Italian soprano Federica Lombardi takes on the role of the emotionally complex Countess. Making her exciting Metropolitan Opera conducting debut is Joanna Mallwitz, current chief conductor of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin.
Beyond its romantic misadventures, Le Nozze di Figaro explores timeless themes of love, power, class, and gender—with music that shifts effortlessly from lighthearted to deeply moving. Mozart’s mastery shines through in every note, from the playful overture to its rich vocal ensembles and arias.
