GRAMMY® Award-winning Icelandic-Chinese artist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Laufey has officially announced her highly anticipated new album, ‘A Matter Of Time,’ set to release on August 22 via Vingolf Recordings / AWAL.
Alongside the announcement, Laufey has unveiled her newest single, “Tough Luck,” a fiery track that reveals a more intense, emotional layer of her artistry.
“‘Tough Luck’ is a fiery song about love gone wrong,” Laufey shares. “I wanted to reveal an angrier side of myself—a side that this unfortunate relationship brought out in me.”

The new single follows last month’s teaser release, “Silver Lining,” which Laufey debuted live with Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic at Coachella, and later during her headline performance at the New Orleans Jazz Fest.
With ‘A Matter Of Time,’ Laufey continues to refine her signature sound—rooted in jazz and classical but unconstrained by tradition.
“I’m constantly thinking about classical and jazz, how to properly preserve them and pay homage,” Laufey says. “For this album, I just wanted to let my heart wander.”
She worked closely with two producers: longtime collaborator Spencer Stewart, and Aaron Dessner (Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran), who brings a fresh dynamic to her evolving sound. This creative freedom allowed Laufey to explore deeper and sometimes darker themes—peeling back the layers of her polished image to reveal something more vulnerable, honest, and raw.
“People expect a pretty façade of girly clothes, fantastical stories, and romantic music,” she reflects. “This time, I was interested in seeing how I could draw out the most flawed parts of myself and look at them directly in the mirror.”
‘A Matter Of Time’ captures the many shades of “real love”—from aching self-reflection to quiet joys and emotional unraveling. The album marks a daring new chapter for Laufey, who continues to evolve with each release.
Having built her previous albums around themes of growing up (‘Everything I Know About Love’) and young love (‘Bewitched’), Laufey views each record as a personal journal. With lush orchestral arrangements, traces of bossa nova, jazz stylings, and her signature honeyed vocals, ‘A Matter Of Time’ promises to expand her timeless artistry even further.
