She was once an injured dog in Laguna. Now, her story has reached the pages of Vogue Philippines.
Banca, a Philippine forest dog or asong gubat, is among the subjects featured in Vogue Philippines’ September/October 2026 issue as part of “Dogue,” a feature that places dogs and their stories at the center of the editorial spotlight.
But before the photographs, the magazine pages, and the Vogue name, there was a dog in need of help.
And there was someone who decided to come back for her.
FROM A CHANCE ENCOUNTER TO A RESCUE
According to Vogue Philippines, Filipino photographer Shaira Luna encountered Banca while staying at a lakeside cabin in Cavinti, Laguna, during a friend’s birthday celebration.
While approaching stray dogs in the area, Luna noticed Banca, whose neck had been severely injured by a chain.
The encounter stayed with Luna.
The following day, she returned with her photography assistant and studio driver to look for the dog. After hours of searching, they found Banca and brought her to a veterinarian.
Banca underwent surgery and was confined for about a week while receiving treatment.
What initially appeared to be a brief encounter eventually became the beginning of Banca’s new life.
A SECOND CHANCE
After her recovery, Banca became part of Luna’s household, joining the photographer’s other rescued animals.
According to Vogue Philippines, Banca gradually regained weight and recovered from her injuries following the surgery.
For Luna, helping Banca was not about having a special skill or a grand plan. It was about responding when she saw an animal that needed help.
“I don’t think I have the skill, I just don’t have the fear,” Luna told Vogue Philippines.
WHEN BANCA ENTERED THE WORLD OF ‘DOGUE’
The name “Dogue” combines “dog” and “Vogue,” bringing dogs into the world of fashion and editorial photography.
The concept has been featured by Vogue internationally, while Vogue Philippines introduced its own Dogue stories in 2026.
Banca’s feature brings the concept into a distinctly Philippine setting.
She is a Philippine forest dog, and her story is rooted not in the fashion world but in a rescue that began in Cavinti, Laguna.
Through Luna’s photographs and Vogue Philippines’ storytelling, Banca’s transformation becomes part of a larger narrative about animals, companionship and second chances.
FROM LAGUNA TO VOGUE
Banca’s journey has taken her far from where she was first found.
She went from an injured dog in Cavinti to a rescued companion, eventually becoming part of Luna’s household and now appearing in the pages of Vogue Philippines.
There is no traditional celebrity story behind her Vogue appearance.
There is simply a story that began with someone noticing an animal in distress—and deciding not to walk away.
Banca did not set out to become a Vogue star. She was simply a dog who needed someone to come back.
And sometimes, the most unexpected stories worth telling begin exactly that way.
