CICC and GCash Forge Partnership to Intensify Efforts Against Fraud

Strengthening its enduring commitment to provide Filipinos with secure and reliable digital financial services, the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordination Center (CICC) has entered into an agreement with the country’s leading finance app, GCash, to bolster its efforts against online fraud and scams.

Under this agreement, GCash will continue its collaboration with the CICC, leveraging their respective capabilities to combat cybercrime activities and enhance cyber resilience while advancing digitization initiatives aligned with its vision of “Finance for All.”

The signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was attended by Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Ivan John Uy, who highlighted the partnership between CICC and GCash as a proactive measure to safeguard Filipinos against cybercriminals.

Secretary Uy emphasized that by joining forces, CICC and GCash aim to preempt cyber threats and protect the public’s finances, sending a clear message to cybercriminals that they will be pursued relentlessly and brought to justice.

Joining Secretary Uy in signing the agreement were Undersecretary Alexander Ramos and Retired Supreme Court Justice Andres Reyes, Jr., representing CICC, along with Winsley Bangit, GCash Head of New Businesses, Corporate Affairs, and Sustainability, and GCash’s legal team.

During the event, Undersecretary Ramos urged victims of online scams to report incidents directly to GCash and CICC rather than resorting to social media. He emphasized the importance of swift reporting to activate the rapid incident response mechanism established through the partnership, thus preventing scammers from victimizing more individuals. He also encouraged the public to utilize the government’s 24/7 anti-scam response hotline by dialing 1326.

Through its collaboration with authorities, GCash has already thwarted over 4 million fraudulent accounts, dismantled 810 phishing sites, and removed 45,000 malicious social media posts and accounts in 2023 alone.

Winsley Bangit emphasized the significance of partnerships with government agencies like CICC in creating a safer digital environment for Filipinos, particularly in online transactions. He expressed GCash’s commitment to working alongside authorities to achieve a safer and fairer society.

In her closing remarks, Atty. Maria Corazon Alvarez-Adriano highlighted GCash’s readiness to embrace state-of-the-art digital technologies with the support of public sector agencies like CICC, contributing to the country’s economic growth through a stable and inclusive financial system.
