In celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year, Gateway Gallery ushers in the season with a compelling exhibition that bridges heritage and modernity. Titled “Beyond Tradition: Evolving Chinese-Filipino Artists,” the show explores how traditional Chinese art forms and philosophies have transformed within the landscape of modern and contemporary Philippine art.

Opened on February 12 and running until March 14, 2026, the exhibition gathers the works of eight Chinese-Filipino artists and two Filipino artists from the gallery’s growing permanent collection. Complementing the showcase are three significant works by guest artist and scholar Arnulfo Esguerra.

Headlining the exhibition is respected Chinese art master Lupicinio “Peter” Ng, who currently serves as Head of the Ateneo Confucius Institute. His presence anchors the exhibit in both tradition and scholarship, embodying the enduring dialogue between cultural roots and contemporary expression.

Curated by Museum Curator Gari R. Apolonio, Beyond Tradition draws from Gateway Gallery’s expanding art collection to highlight the distinct yet evolving contributions of Chinese-Filipino artists. The exhibition examines how ethnicity informs artistic vision, technique, and thematic concerns—revealing how Chinese aesthetics, philosophies, and sensibilities continue to shape Philippine art. Rather than presenting tradition as static, the show underscores its fluidity—how inherited forms are reinterpreted through personal narratives and present-day realities.

To deepen public engagement, Gateway Gallery will host a free public lecture on Chinese art on February 21 at 3:00 p.m., followed by a Chinese art workshop on February 28 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., both facilitated by Esguerra. Holding an MA in Archaeology and currently a faculty member at UP Manila’s Department of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, Esguerra brings both academic rigor and artistic practice to the program. He specializes in the two principal styles of Chinese painting: Gongbi (meticulous style) and Xieyi (spontaneous style), offering participants insight into technique, philosophy, and creative discipline.

Featured artists in the exhibition include Peter Ng, Chito Sy Santiago, Iris Babao-Uy, Lea Zoraina Sindao Lim, Sharleen Cu, Joemarie Sanclara Chua, Sarah Liuson Ongsun, Irene Sy, Grace Dadufalza, and Lita Wells, alongside guest artist Arnulfo Esguerra.

With Beyond Tradition, Gateway Gallery presents more than an exhibition—it offers a nuanced study of identity, heritage, and artistic evolution, inviting audiences to reflect on how tradition persists not by remaining unchanged, but by continuously transforming.
