In an era of rapid change, digital disinformation, and the widespread circulation of stories that are often believed because of how many people share them rather than the truth they contain, an important question remains for Filipino youth: What is the true value of honesty, and how can we uphold it in a society where trust seems to be gradually eroding?

A children’s graphic novel invites readers to reflect on this question through a simple yet meaningful story.

Ang Paghahanap Kay Tapat, written by Bert Banico and illustrated by Adriel Perez, is a Tagalog graphic novel published by Kawangis Publishing Co. in 2024. Through the story of Obet and his beloved pet, Tapat, the book presents a journey that is not merely about finding a missing dog, but also about discovering the deeper meaning of honesty and good character.

More Than a Story About a Missing Pet

Tapat is a pet dog given to Obet by his parents in recognition of his good behavior.

However, when Tapat goes missing, a search begins—one that leads Obet toward a broader understanding of people and the world around him.

Behind the story lies an important concept: honesty is not measured solely by the promises we make, but by the actions we choose to take, especially when no one is watching.

This message may be meaningful to young readers, but it is particularly relevant to Generation Z, which is growing up in an era when recognition, popularity, and influence are often shaped by what people display on social media.

In a world where pretending to be someone else has become easy, being genuine is an act of conviction.

Honesty: A Value Rooted in Our History

Honesty is not a foreign concept in Filipino culture.

Long before the arrival of the Spaniards in the Philippine archipelago, Filipino communities already had their own systems of governance, social relationships, customs, and values.

In early communities, trust among families, leaders, traders, and fellow members of society played an important role. Respect for others, honoring agreements, and fulfilling responsibilities within relationships were among the values that helped maintain social order and unity.

Although it would be inaccurate to assume that all early Filipino communities shared exactly the same standards and practices, our history shows that social values did not begin with colonial rule.

Our ancestors already had their own cultures, traditions, and systems of values before foreign colonizers arrived.

From this perspective, Ang Paghahanap Kay Tapat can be read as a modern reminder to young people that good character and integrity are not simply lessons passed down by schools or religious institutions.

They are also part of a broader understanding of our identity as Filipinos.

A Lesson for Generation Z

For Generation Z, honesty may be more important than ever in an age when information spreads rapidly, but not everything shared is true.

In the digital age, misinformation can damage reputations, create divisions, and influence public decisions.

Being honest, therefore, means more than simply refusing to lie.

It also means:

  • Verifying information before sharing it.
  • Admitting mistakes when we are wrong.
  • Respecting the truth, even when it contradicts our personal beliefs.
  • Standing up for what is right, even when it is unpopular.
  • Taking responsibility for our words and actions, both online and offline.

In this way, the lesson of a children’s comic book becomes a meaningful guide for a generation capable of transforming society through technology, knowledge, and active participation.

Meet the Creators

Bert Banico, also known as Albert Banico, is a writer, freelance journalist, independent vlogger, cultural worker, social development advocate, and sociologist.

His works include novels and other literary pieces published in the Philippines and abroad. Ang Paghahanap Kay Tapat is his first graphic novel.

Meanwhile, Adriel “Ade” Perez is a graphic designer and illustrator from Bacoor, Cavite. He graduated with a Bachelor of Multimedia Arts degree from St. Dominic College of Asia in 2023.

Through the combination of storytelling and illustration, the two creators bring to life a narrative that can serve as a bridge connecting children, parents, teachers, and young readers in search of meaningful literature.

The Profiler’s Verdict

Ang Paghahanap Kay Tapat is more than a graphic novel meant for entertainment.

It is an opportunity to reconsider the meaning of honesty at a time when trust can easily be broken and truth is often drowned out by noise.

For parents and teachers, the book can serve as a tool for teaching good character and integrity.

For Generation Z, it offers a reminder that being modern does not mean abandoning the values that have helped shape our identity as Filipinos.

And for all readers, the search for Tapat presents a challenge:

If honesty is a value we want to see in our society, are we willing to practice it in our own actions?

Because genuine change does not begin with searching for someone who is honest.

It begins with choosing to be honest with ourselves, with others, and with our nation.

Ang Paghahanap Kay Tapat is available through Kawangis Publishing’s online stores on Shopee and TikTok Shop.
