The Medical Wellness Association (MWA) has officially declared 2026 as “The Year of the Sardine”, aiming to inspire and educate consumers worldwide about the immense health benefits of incorporating real, nutritionally dense foods into their diets. Sardines, recognized as one of the most affordable and nutrient-packed options, are at the forefront of this movement.

“With the ongoing decline in wellness metrics across much of the developed world, it’s clear that the wellness community must reassess its recommendations,” says Dr. Christopher Breuleux, President of MWA. “Metabolic health is emerging as a fundamental pillar of overall wellness. It plays a crucial role in preventing diseases like Type 2 Diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease, and even certain cancers, kidney, and liver dysfunction.”
James Michael Laffety, MWA Board Member and Faculty Member, emphasizes the power of sardines in combating metabolic diseases. “Packed with protein, Omega-3 fats, and a rich array of essential vitamins and minerals, sardines are one of the most cost-effective ‘superfoods’ available. By declaring 2026 the Year of the Sardine, we’re sending a simple and actionable message to consumers to take charge of their wellness.”
The buzz surrounding sardines has been growing exponentially. Health experts and wellness influencers worldwide are championing concepts like the “3-day sardine fast” on social media platforms like Instagram and X. Sardines have been featured in top podcasts, and with the global shift toward prioritizing metabolic health, the trend is only expected to gain momentum.
Sardine consumption has surged in recent years, with the market growing at an impressive rate of +7.5% annually, even before the rising awareness of metabolic health. MWA predicts the market’s growth will accelerate to over 10% annually starting in 2026, fueled by increased consumer education, awareness, and recent updates to the US Food Pyramid.
In recognition of its superior health benefits, the MWA awarded the prestigious “Superfood” seal to Mega Sardines, a leading Filipino brand, in mid-2025. Mega Sardines earned this honor for their commitment to quality, with a vertically integrated production process that ensures unparalleled freshness by processing fish from catch to can within 12 hours, sourced from the pristine waters of the South Pacific.
Mega Prime Foods, Inc., a 50-year-old company rooted in the Filipino value of “Malasakit” (meaning “caring for others without expecting anything in return”), has embraced this honor and is actively driving global education and awareness. The company’s commitment to improving consumer wellness extends beyond product offerings—it is also spearheading clinical studies, in partnership with major universities, to further explore the impact of food choices on metabolic health.
Michelle Tiu Lim Chan, CEO of Mega Prime Foods, encapsulates the company’s mission: “Our journey starts with the cultural value of Malasakit. We’re proud to provide high-quality, value-driven foods that enhance the health of consumers in the Philippines and beyond. Earning the ‘Superfood’ seal from the MWA is a testament to our 50 years of dedication. My parents laid the foundation, and I’m honored to carry their legacy forward for the next 50 years and beyond.”
With The Year of the Sardine now in full swing, the spotlight on this powerhouse food continues to grow, empowering consumers to make healthier choices and fueling a global movement toward improved metabolic health.
