Wearable Technology Empowers Frontline Workers and Ensures Safety

By Randy Escuyos, Business Unit Head for Mobility, Fujitsu Philippines

The manufacturing industry is currently undergoing a significant transformation, driven by the convergence of new technologies and a labor shortage unprecedented in modern times. Despite decades of slow progress, the COVID-19 pandemic triggered an industry-wide disruption, prompting all manufacturers to adjust to this new digital environment. In the Philippines, manufacturing is a vital contributor to the country’s GDP, with consumer-packaged goods (CPG) being a crucial part of the industry.

However, CPG manufacturers have traditionally lagged behind other industries in digitizing and automating their processes. To remain competitive, they must now adopt new technologies, such as automation and wearable tech, which can boost production and cut costs. Additionally, CPG businesses are under pressure to ensure that their workforce is well-trained and can keep up with the demands of a digitalized industry.

Assisted reality (aR) technology, which bridges executives and frontline employees with existing Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure, is becoming increasingly popular. Manufacturers are turning to ruggedized tablets and immersive virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) technologies to increase worker productivity, but they may not always be practical or safe for production or the front lines. Therefore, aR devices with industrial strength, which can connect frontline employees across factories and businesses securely and effectively, are ideal.

Wearable technology like head-mounted displays (HMDs) enables frontline employees to maintain situational awareness while accessing information without using their hands, making them perfect for use in potentially dangerous and loud environments. Overall, the manufacturing industry must embrace new digital technologies and wearable tech to ensure their long-term success.

Helping co-create safer facilities, ensuring frontliner’s safety

Fujitsu has introduced a range of aR devices as part of its Mobility and Wearable Tech Solutions to facilitate remote collaboration for CPG organizations and other manufacturers. These solutions were recently demonstrated by Fujitsu during the PLDT Enterprise Digicon 2022 (Boundless) held at the Marriott Grand Ballroom, which showcased enterprise solutions that can help companies adapt to a more hybrid and digital world.

Fujitsu’s latest mobility solution includes industrial-grade and assisted technologies that facilitate collaboration among employees. These technologies digitize and automate processes that require human contact, ensuring the safety of front-line workers while enabling the secure and accurate transmission of data among manufacturing industry employees.

At Fujitsu, we believe that people are the most important and valuable asset in any organization. With these wearable technologies, we aim to provide outcome-based solutions that increase visibility into a worker’s well-being, especially in hazardous situations and remote locations.
