SunKissed Lola has returned after more than a year with their latest single, “Edi Magalit Ka.” Building on the emotional storytelling of their previous hits “Pasilyo,” “Paki Sabi,” and “Makalimutan Ka,” the track explores the themes of patience and choosing love over conflict. By transforming a relatable Filipino phrase into a warm, playful melody, the band successfully kicks off a familiar yet fresh chapter in their musical journey.
Celebrated for capturing the deep emotions, longing, and complexities of romance, SunKissed Lola enters a new artistic era with a track that is both comforting and innovative. “Edi Magalit Ka” repurposes a phrase commonly heard in daily couples’ spats or friendly disagreements, but the band infuses it with a much gentler intent. Rather than coming across as stubborn or uncaring, the song transforms the phrase into a tender reassurance that love remains steady, even through tough moments.
Vocalist Laura Lacbain explains that the track is ultimately about navigating romance. “It’s a song about relationships,” she shares. “Hindi maiiwasan ang away sa relationship, pero hindi pa rin mawawala ang love. Susuyuin pa rin sa huli.”
Describing the track as a “loving anthem,” vocalist and guitarist Alvin “Bino” Serito emphasizes that the core sentiment remains tender despite any frustration between partners. As he puts it: “Even if you’re mad with your special someone, at the end of the day, they’re still your favorite person to come home to.”
The track actually dates back to 2021, though its initial version had a much more prideful edge. Over time, the band reworked the lyrics to embrace emotional openness and vulnerability. Vocalist and guitarist Dan Ombao notes that Bino played a key role in molding the song’s confessional moments, even suggesting the addition of the phrase “’Di ba?” to give the message a much gentler touch.
Bino clarifies that the single ultimately focuses on letting go of one’s ego for the sake of love. Rejecting the need to be right during disagreements, he notes: “No one has to win. I will always choose the relationship over the argument.” That shift in emotion became the very core of “Edi Magalit Ka.” A phrase that might otherwise come across as petty or sarcastic is transformed into something genuinely heartfelt. Because its impact relies heavily on how the audience reads into it, the title naturally sparks curiosity.
“The title was intriguing in itself,” Laura says. “You will be curious. Pwedeng i-send sa jowa. You really need to listen to the song to understand the context.”
The musical direction of “Edi Magalit Ka” introduces listeners to a more deliberate and laid-back dimension of SunKissed Lola’s artistry. According to band member Dan, the track’s creative process began humbly as an acoustic solo piece. Once he introduced the raw concept to the rest of the group, the final arrangement fell into place through an organic collaborative effort, with each musician instinctively weaving in their own distinct parts and instrumental layers to build the complete soundscape.
Bassist Danj Quimson emphasized that the goal was to maintain a clean, uncomplicated instrumentation to ensure the message took center stage. “We all united to make it sound laid-back, simple, and we wanted to highlight the lyrics of the song,” he shares. In contrast to the unpredictable arrangements of their previous tracks, “Edi Magalit Ka” intentionally delivers a lighter, warmer, and more accessible listening experience.
“For this one, we made it simple for the audience,” Bino says. “We made it magaan sa tainga.” Dan adds, “That’s also what the song asks for. A very simple, refreshing, and warm song.”
Drummer Genson Viloria believes the true appeal of “Edi Magalit Ka” lies in its immediate sense of familiarity. He admits that upon his first listen, the track’s infectious rhythm and effortless flow were so naturally catchy that he initially mistook it for an existing classic cover.
While “Edi Magalit Ka” preserves the smooth, easy-listening aesthetic that has become a hallmark of SunKissed Lola’s discography, the band recognizes this specific release as a much more raw, stripped-back, and emotionally transparent milestone. For Dan, the song’s true distinction lies in its unfiltered sincerity and palpable sense of honesty. Laura echoes this sentiment, viewing the track as a pivotal new creative chapter for the group. She highlights that the narrative shifts away from typical romanticized tropes, choosing instead to focus squarely on the authentic complexities of being in a committed relationship and the conscious effort required to navigate the friction and struggles that naturally arise between partners.
“It’s the comeback of SunKissed Lola,” Laura says. Coinciding with the band’s upcoming five-year milestone, the release of “Edi Magalit Ka” signals a transition into a more mature and deliberate creative chapter. Bassist Danj Quimson observed a distinct shift in the group’s dynamic during their studio sessions, noting that everyone entered the booth with a heightened focus on putting the integrity of the track above all else.
For Bino, this new chapter marks a self-assured return to the band’s foundational sound. “We know our strengths and now we are able to maximize it,” he shares. “We are more intentional in releasing this song.” Through this release, SunKissed Lola aims to leave listeners smiling, feeling butterflies, and perhaps reconsidering how they approach minor arguments with their partners. “We want them to feel what we felt the first time we played the song,” Bino says. “We hope it makes them smile, the way kung paano namin siya niyakap sa umpisa.”
Laura further hopes that their demographic of younger fans—particularly those navigating the early stages of romance—realize that maintaining love requires mutual effort and maturity. “Sana kiligin din sila,” she says. “Sana our young listeners na bago pa lang sa relationship, ma-realize nila na they need to work it out.”
Moving forward, “Edi Magalit Ka” opens an exciting new chapter centered on deeper storytelling and closer listener connections. SunKissed Lola is gearing up to deliver a packed lineup of new songs, digital content, live gigs, and concert tours, while pulling back the curtain to show fans the unique personalities behind the instruments. “We want to be part of more people’s stories,” Bino says.
