Shell Philippines Recycles 3 Tons of Plastic into Bike Racks

Shell Philippines is taking bold steps toward sustainability by transforming plastic waste into purpose-driven infrastructure. As part of its commitment to circular economy practices and sustainable mobility, the company has installed 110 bike racks made from a staggering 3,000 kilograms of plastic waste across Metro Manila and Southern Luzon.

This initiative directly addresses the country’s plastic waste crisis and supports the implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Act, which mandates large corporations to recover at least 40% of their plastic packaging footprint by 2024.

To bring this project to life, Shell purchased plastic credits from PCX Markets, a global platform that funds upstream solutions to plastic pollution. Each credit represents the responsible collection and processing of 1,000 kilograms of plastic waste. The proceeds were channeled to EFT Philippines, a Davao-based social enterprise that upcycles plastic waste into high-quality items like outdoor furniture—and now, bike racks.

By buying these upcycled racks, Shell not only supported the production of eco-friendly infrastructure but also helped drive income opportunities for local waste pickers and aggregators such as junk shops. It’s a full-circle approach—from waste collection and upcycling to the final installation of functional, sustainable assets.

Shell first unveiled the prototype rack during Sustainability Week 2024. The initial 55 units were rolled out in early 2025 at various Shell Mobility sites, while another 55 are scheduled for installation in Q3 2025.

This program is part of Shell’s broader sustainability mission, which includes increasing the use of recycled plastic in its packaging to 30% by 2030, and ensuring all Shell-branded packaging is reusable or recyclable. Through its partnership with PCX Markets, Shell Philippines is developing downstream plastic diversion projects that drive environmental impact and social innovation.

By integrating sustainable practices across operations and customer touchpoints, Shell is helping reshape the future—one upcycled bike rack at a time.
