Glenn Banaguas, a world-renowned science diplomat and multi-awarded scientist, has been named among the first-ever Laureates of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina International Award—marking a historic milestone in global sustainability leadership. He shares this inaugural honor with Prof. Hassan Shafik Abdullah of the University of East London.
Established in 2025 under the patronage of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina International Award recognizes individuals whose work advances sustainability, innovation, and human well-being. The inaugural award theme, “Green Technology Applications for Achieving Well-Being and Happiness for Humanity,” reflects the institution’s commitment to honoring excellence that uplifts societies and shapes a more resilient future.
Each laureate receives a gold medal, an official certificate of excellence, and a cash prize of one million Egyptian pounds. The award will be formally conferred by President El-Sisi in a ceremonial event this February in Cairo.
Banaguas expressed his profound gratitude to Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and to the esteemed Board of Judges for the recognition. “This honor is not mine alone,” he shared. “It is a tribute to a shared journey of resilience, stewardship, and service—a journey that binds us together in purpose and hope.”
He further reflected on the deeper meaning of the recognition, emphasizing that service must always be grounded in compassion. “Love is the greatest blessing a life can offer, for it gives meaning to service and strength to resilience. Awards do not mark an end, but a calling—to continue serving humanity with humility and courage. True happiness is found not in recognition, but in the lives we touch and the hope we inspire.”
As the first Filipino Laureate of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina International Award, Banaguas’s achievement highlights the growing influence of science diplomacy and sustainability leadership in fostering global collaboration.
