Philippines Key in AirAsia's 30-Route Expansion Strategy

AirAsia Aviation Group has exciting plans for 2025, with over 30 new routes set to launch as part of its strategy to strengthen ASEAN regional and domestic connectivity. Among the beneficiaries of this expansion is the Philippines, which will enjoy enhanced air travel options as the airline group moves toward full post-pandemic recovery.

Increased Frequency and Optimized Routes

This year, AirAsia Group will focus on optimizing its route network by increasing flight frequencies across high-demand routes in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Cambodia. The Group’s growth strategy also targets expanding services to high-demand destinations, particularly in India, China, and other ASEAN countries.

As part of this initiative, AirAsia Philippines will increase its Taipei service from 14 weekly flights to 17 weekly flights starting in July 2025, offering more convenience and flexibility to Filipino travelers.

“We are excited to align with AirAsia Aviation Group’s strategy to enhance connectivity for both domestic and international markets by focusing on the most profitable and popular routes,” said Ricky Isla, CEO of AirAsia Philippines. “The Philippines holds immense potential in global tourism, and by increasing our Taipei flight frequencies, we are fulfilling our brand promise of democratizing air travel while inspiring travelers to explore their dream destinations.”

A Stronger and Sustainable Future for AirAsia

These efforts form the foundation for a sustainable, profitable future, paving the way for the proposed acquisition of AirAsia by AirAsia X Berhad from Capital A Berhad. This consolidation will integrate both short- and medium-haul airlines, creating a stronger, more resilient aviation group.

“In 2025, as we return to full capacity, we will balance sustainable growth with profitability by focusing on strategic, demand-driven connectivity across Asia,” said Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia Aviation Group. “With over 30 new routes and increased frequencies on our most popular services, we are responding directly to market demand and Fly-Thru connecting opportunities.”

Lingam also highlighted the impressive growth of Fly-Thru traffic, which increased to 4.3 million passengers in 2024. The Group now targets over 7 million Fly-Thru guests in 2025, representing approximately 10% of total passengers.

Fleet Expansion to Support Growth

To support these ambitious expansion plans, AirAsia is set to operate a fleet of 234 narrowbody aircraft across its five short-haul airlines by the end of 2025. Only 16 aircraft remain to be reactivated, while 14 new aircraft deliveries have been confirmed—four from Airbus and 10 via lessors.

As AirAsia Group reaffirms its commitment to expanding connectivity and enhancing the passenger experience, these upcoming developments signal a new era of opportunity and growth for travelers across the Philippines and beyond.
