In a creative approach to disaster education, students across the Philippines are now learning the importance of disaster response through a board game like no other. “Master of Disaster” (MOD)—developed by the Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation (ASSIST)—is an engaging and educational tool designed to equip the youth with life-saving knowledge and skills in disaster preparedness.

More than just a game, MOD promotes the spirit of “bayanihan”, the Filipino tradition of communal unity and cooperation. By working together to overcome simulated disaster scenarios, students not only learn how to respond in times of crisis but also the importance of supporting one another.

Following a successful first run that reached over 81,000 students and 300 teachers, Year 2 of the project is expanding to 20 schools in Cagayan de Oro City. The initiative continues to grow in impact, with strong support from Pilipinas Shell.

“By empowering children with the knowledge and skills to navigate challenging situations, we can foster resilience within communities and better protect them during times of calamities,” said Serge Bernal, Vice President for Corporate Relations at Shell Pilipinas.

Students and educators alike have praised the program. A student from Libjo Elementary School shared, “Playing MOD improves our social skills and teaches us to work together and escape disasters.” A teacher from Tabangao Elementary School added, “The MOD rollout was very interesting. It motivated the students to learn about disasters.”

Backed by Pilipinas Shell’s longstanding commitment to community development and safety, the MOD initiative reflects a powerful investment in the future. By educating young Filipinos today, the program helps build more resilient, disaster-ready communities for tomorrow.

Shell remains steadfast in supporting innovative partnerships that empower communities and pave the way for a safer, more prepared Philippines.
