AirAsia strengthens its commitment to passenger safety with updated and clearly defined guidelines on the carriage and use of portable electronic devices (PEDs), introducing stricter protocols for power banks across all flights.

As part of its enhanced safety measures, AirAsia now treats power banks separately from spare batteries. Each passenger is permitted to carry a maximum of two power banks, with each unit not exceeding 100Wh in capacity—ensuring compliance with international aviation safety standards.

To further reduce risks, power banks must be securely stored at all times, either in the seat pocket or under the seat. They are strictly prohibited in overhead compartments and checked baggage. Any damaged, defective, or non-compliant units may be confiscated by airport authorities to maintain onboard safety.

Clear Guidelines for Electronic Devices

AirAsia continues to allow commonly used portable electronic devices—including smartphones, laptops, cameras, watches, and other personal gadgets—onboard. Devices powered by lithium or lithium-ion batteries exceeding 100Wh but not more than 160Wh may still be carried for personal use, subject to prior airline approval.

Meanwhile, spare or loose batteries must be kept in cabin baggage only and individually protected to prevent short circuits, reinforcing safe handling practices throughout the journey.

E-cigarettes and self-balancing battery-powered devices remain strictly prohibited in checked baggage, in line with global aviation safety regulations.

Commitment to Safer Skies

These updated guidelines reflect AirAsia’s proactive approach to mitigating potential risks associated with battery-powered devices, ensuring a safer and more secure travel experience for all passengers.

As one of the region’s leading low-cost carriers, AirAsia continues to prioritize safety while making air travel accessible to millions. Since its founding in 2001, the airline has flown over 800 million guests across more than 130 destinations, staying true to its mission: “Now Everyone Can Fly.”

With a growing fleet of over 200 aircraft and ongoing investments in sustainability—including a net-zero emissions target by 2050—AirAsia remains at the forefront of innovation, safety, and responsible aviation in the Asia-Pacific region.
