The Magayon Tree: A Sustainable Christmas at Somerset Alabang

Inspired by the wonders of Mayon Volcano in Bicol, Albay, the property honors the element of fire with its sustainable Christmas tree design.

Somerset Alabang Manila welcomed the Christmas season with a dazzling and meaningful celebration as it held its Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on November 26, 2025. This year’s installation unveiled a breathtaking Mayon Volcano–inspired Christmas tree built around the element of Fire, marking the final chapter of the property’s four-year artistic journey through the elements of nature—Air (2022), Water (2023), Earth (2024), and now Fire, symbolizing connection, compassion, and community.

Deeply rooted in cultural storytelling and sustainability, this year’s design draws inspiration from the iconic Mt. Mayon and the historic Cagsawa Ruins in Albay, Bicol. The Cagsawa Ruins—remnants of a 16th-century church buried during Mayon’s 1814 eruption—served as a powerful symbol of resilience. Even the theme’s name pays homage to the Bicolano word magayon, meaning “beautiful,” a nod to the legend of Daragang Magayon and the breathtaking landscapes of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

The centerpiece Mayon-inspired Christmas tree towered over the lobby, showcasing its near-perfect conical silhouette. Flowing down from its peak were cascading fabric drapes mimicking glowing streams of lava—representing strength, rebirth, and hope. Surrounding the main tree were smaller gold rattan trees handcrafted from repurposed materials, complemented by ornaments made from PET bottles, recycled cardboard, refurbished décor, and rattan accents. Leaves from last year’s handmade tree were upcycled into fresh decorations adorning the lobby ceiling.

The creative ingenuity extended to every detail. The TV display cover was crafted from recycled cardboard and tissue rolls, while the Cagsawa Ruins sculpture was meticulously built using scrap wood, repurposed holiday décor, and hand-textured recycled cardboard. A standout piece was the replica church bell, ingeniously made from an old metal refrigerant tank—adding authenticity and charm to the beloved landmark.

More than a visual spectacle, the evening reflected Somerset Alabang Manila’s unwavering commitment to community engagement and sustainability. This year, the property partnered with Diversey for the “Soap for Hope” program, which transforms discarded hotel soap into sanitized, repurposed bars for communities in need—supporting both hygiene and livelihood.

The celebration also highlighted a year of significant milestones. Operations Manager Sandra Sangab-Moreno proudly shared the team’s recent achievement: winning the prestigious Ascott Cares Award at the South East Asia Leadership Conference, a recognition bestowed across The Ascott Limited’s global network. She also revealed exciting developments for 2026, including the launch of the property’s new all-day dining restaurant, café, and event spaces on the 5th level—designed to host memorable gatherings in the years ahead.

The ceremony was graced by Assistant Secretary Sharlene Batin of the Department of Tourism, representatives from Filinvest City, and executives of The Ascott Limited Philippines. Guests were treated to immersive and sustainable installations, a moving performance by the Philippine Institute for the Deaf choir, and a fiery showcase by the Alab Poi dancers. The evening concluded with a specially curated Bicolano-inspired buffet by Chef Jeffrey Reyes, in collaboration with Citadines Bay City Manila.
