Capital A Berhad (“Capital A”) has taken a major step toward expanding its global footprint after signing a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications—an agreement that could soon establish Bahrain as AirAsia’s strategic hub in the Middle East. The partnership marks the beginning of a long-term plan to strengthen air connectivity between Asean and one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.

The LOI lays out a broad framework for deeper collaboration, covering airline operations, cargo and logistics, maintenance capabilities, and aviation talent development. The shared goal: open new gateways between Bahrain and Asean, and build a powerful aviation and economic corridor linking Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and the United States.
Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A, described the partnership as “a game-changer.”
“With our aviation restructuring soon to be complete, both Capital A and AirAsia are entering a bold new phase of global growth—and Bahrain will be a powerful launchpad for us in the Middle East,” he said. “AirAsia has always been driven by innovation, expanding far beyond Malaysia and building a strong presence across Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Cambodia. Our partnership with Bahrain reflects that same pioneering spirit and strengthens our mission of ‘Now Everyone Can Fly.’”
Fernandes emphasized that the future of aviation is “multi-hub, seamless and borderless,” revealing AirAsia’s projection of more than 25 daily flights between Bahrain and Asean megahubs by 2030, with an estimated 20 million passengers carried over the next five years.
Bahrain’s Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, H.E. Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, welcomed the partnership, highlighting its alignment with the country’s Economic Vision 2030.
“This collaboration reinforces Bahrain as a tourism and logistics hub and strengthens its role as a strategic connector linking Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa and the United States,” he said. “It opens opportunities for both business and leisure travelers while creating highly skilled jobs for Bahrainis and boosting our national GDP.”
Under the LOI, AirAsia will assess the possibility of launching flights from Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia to Bahrain, with onward connections to long-haul destinations. Capital A is also exploring the establishment of a Bahrain-based Air Operator Certificate (AOC) to operate narrowbody aircraft into key Middle Eastern, Central Asian, African, and European cities.
This expansion could generate over 100,000 jobs across the aviation ecosystem. A multi-year talent development initiative will train Bahraini nationals in pilot, cabin crew, engineering, and ground operations, with 1,000 hires targeted in the first year alone.
Capital A’s Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) arm, Asia Digital Engineering (ADE), also plans to establish a major facility in Bahrain. The facility will include hangars and workshops capable of servicing both narrowbody and widebody aircraft, setting a new benchmark for quick turnaround times and providing advanced training for Airbus and Boeing fleets. The move reinforces ADE’s commitment to shaping Bahrain into a Middle Eastern hub for engineering excellence.
Meanwhile, Teleport, Capital A’s logistics arm, will position Bahrain as its primary gateway beyond Asia for the first time. Teleport plans to station dedicated freighters in the Kingdom to enhance connectivity throughout the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and the CIS, strengthening global e-commerce and cargo flows.
This milestone comes shortly after Capital A completed all conditions for the disposal of its aviation business, enabling the formation of one unified AirAsia Group as a multi-hub low-cost carrier network. With AirAsia Group driving global airline expansion and Capital A developing a complementary travel and digital ecosystem, both entities are now strategically aligned to open new markets, unlock growth, and build a more connected future for travelers and partners worldwide.
