The Big Bang Theory universe is expanding once again — this time with a wildly unexpected twist.
HBO Max has officially given a series order to Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, a bold new comedy from Chuck Lorre Productions and Warner Bros. Television. The upcoming spinoff is executive produced by Emmy®-nominated creators Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady — the same team behind the iconic original series.
“We’re excited to be continuing the legacy of The Big Bang Theory,” said Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and HBO Max Content. “This new chapter wouldn’t be possible without Chuck, Bill, and Zak, who’ve brought both continuity and fresh brilliance to the universe fans know and love.”
But this isn’t your typical sitcom spinoff.
“I wanted to do something radical—something that would take me completely out of my comfort zone,” said Chuck Lorre. “It’s the kind of story the original Big Bang characters would’ve loved, debated, and overanalyzed.”
In classic Big Bang-style absurdity, the plot follows comic book store owner Stuart Bloom, played once again by Kevin Sussman, who accidentally destroys reality after mishandling a device built by Sheldon and Leonard. The mishap triggers a multiverse Armageddon, forcing Stuart and his unlikely crew—girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), geology pal Bert (Brian Posehn), and quantum physicist Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie)—to embark on a reality-bending rescue mission.
Along the way, they encounter alternate-universe versions of familiar faces from The Big Bang Theory. And, as the title suggests, things don’t go exactly as planned.
“The idea came to me during a vision quest in the Amazon rainforest,” joked Zak Penn, “when a carrier pigeon from Chuck Lorre arrived with a pitch I couldn’t resist. The next thing I knew, we were building a sci-fi comedy show that lives in a universe created by Chuck and Bill.”
Bill Prady added, “Writing this show with Chuck and Zak has been a blast. We’re taking characters fans already love and dropping them into a massive, mythologically rich sci-fi adventure—with the same humor and heart that made The Big Bang Theory special.”
