Seoul, South Korea — April 4, 2025
Korea’s emerging indie team, Studio BBB, is making waves on the global stage with their innovative and deeply emotional puzzle game, MONOWAVE. The game, developed by five students from Sogang University’s Art & Technology department, has just clinched the Best Student Game title at the prestigious Indie Game Award 2025, held during the Taipei Game Show.
A Unique Indie Game from Korea’s Next-Gen Developers
Originally a student project from five classmates at Sogang University’s Art & Technology department, MONOWAVE is now a standout indie title. The team formed Studio BBB, embracing the Korean word 비주류 (bi-ju-ryu)—meaning non-mainstream—as the heart of their brand. The “Triple B” stands for Bold, Brave, and a bit Offbeat. The studio is redefining what it means to be an indie game developer in Korea, focusing on storytelling and emotional depth.
What is MONOWAVE? A Deeply Emotional Puzzle Game
MONOWAVE is more than just a puzzle game. It’s a heartfelt journey through the emotional spectrum, built around four core feelings: joy, anger, sadness, and anxiety. Each emotion gives players a distinct ability to interact with the game world. Initially inspired by elemental transformations, the team shifted direction after asking themselves a key question: What if puzzle mechanics were based on human emotion instead of physics?
Their research led them deep into psychology and philosophy, particularly the work of Paul Ekman, whose classification of emotions helped shape the gameplay structure. Personal experiences added authenticity to the worldbuilding, such as a “resonance system” where players use song to connect with NPCs, and the “anxiety world,” where fog can only be cleared by “joy butterflies” a metaphor for overcoming internal struggles.
The game’s visual style is equally distinct, fusing scratch art and one-line drawing to create a minimalist yet expressive aesthetic.
Global Attention at Taipei Game Show 2025
The team’s international debut at the Taipei Game Show was made possible with support from Korea’s Creative Content Agency (KOCCA). Reactions from players in Taiwan, ranging from deep curiosity to heartfelt excitement, reaffirmed the universal power of emotion. Studio BBB firmly believes that feelings transcend both language and culture, and their success at the show proved just that.
