Philippine Big Screen Premiere of Umberto Giordano’s ‘Fedora’ Set for October

CCP’s The Met: Live HD Season 8 continues its captivating journey with a special screening of Umberto Giordano’s thrilling drama, “Fedora” set to take place on October 3, 2023, at Greenbelt 3 Cinema 1 in Makati City.

This opera tells a gripping love story brimming with murder, revenge, and intrigue. It follows the journey of Princess Fedora as she seeks vengeance for her beloved Count. Unbeknownst to her, the Count, whom she passionately loves, has betrayed her with another woman, the wife of the alleged murderer. As Fedora encounters the murderer and listens to his confession, she discovers that she has fallen in love with the man who took her betrothed’s life. How will this complex tale unravel, and will Fedora ever find her elusive happy ending?

Giordano’s masterpiece, which first premiered in 1898, faced the challenge of captivating modern audiences. However, it made a triumphant return in 2022 when the Metropolitan Theatre of New York retrieved it from its archives after 25 years, giving it a fresh and contemporary appeal.

“Fedora” boasts an ensemble of electrifying voices, led by soprano Sonya Yoncheva, one of today’s most enthralling artists, in the role of Fedora, and star tenor Piotr Beczała as Count Loris. The cast also includes Rosa Feola as Olga, Piotr Beczala as Loris Ipanoff, and Lucas Meachem as De Siriex. Maestro Marco Armiliato takes the conductor’s baton.

Director David McVicar brings to life a detailed and dramatic staging with an ingenious fixed set that unfolds like a Russian nesting doll, revealing the opera’s three distinct settings: a palace in St. Petersburg, a fashionable Parisian salon, and a picturesque villa in the Swiss Alps.

The three-act opera is renowned for its “Amor ti vieta” (Love forbids you) aria, typically performed by tenors. This brief aria, less than two minutes long, is sung by Count Loris as he declares his love to Fedora in Act II.

Now in its 8th season, CCP’s The Met: Live in HD is a special program presented by the CCP Film, Broadcast, and New Media Division (FBNMD) under the Production and Exhibition Department (PED). It showcases operatic productions using High-Definition (HD) digital video technology and Dolby Sound, delivering an immersive experience akin to witnessing an opera production at the Met “live.”

This program is co-presented by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the Metropolitan Opera of New York, the Filipinas Opera Society Foundation, Inc., and Ayala Malls Cinemas.

Tickets are available for PHP450.00. Students and young professionals can enjoy screenings for PHP100.00 upon presenting a valid ID. Tickets can be purchased at Greenbelt ticket booths or through the website www.sureseats.com.
