Natatanging Nilalang: SM Cares, DSAPI Celebrate People with Down Syndrome through Happy Walk

On a beautiful Saturday morning, the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall was filled with excitement as individuals with Down Syndrome, their families, and supporters gathered for the annual Happy Walk for Down Syndrome. Organized by the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Inc. (DSAPI) and SM Cares, the event aims to promote awareness and empower individuals with Down Syndrome.

The event kicked off with the registration of participants, where attendees received their event kits and t-shirts. The official program started with an invocation and singing of the National Anthem, followed by welcoming remarks from Nill and Alex Arroyo, the heads of Happy Walk 2023.

Mr. Luis Harder, the DSAPI President, then delivered a heartwarming speech on the organization’s mission and achievements in supporting individuals with Down Syndrome in the Philippines for over three decades. Mr. Elmer Lapeña, the DSAPI Chairman, also shared his thoughts on the successful partnership between DSAPI and SM Cares, which has made events like Happy Walk possible.

Engr. Bien Mateo, SM Cares Program Director for Disability Affairs, delivered a special message highlighting the importance of empowering individuals with Down Syndrome and promoting their inclusion in society. The message also emphasized the need for a more inclusive environment for persons with disabilities, aligning with SM Cares’ commitment to promoting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities.

One of the event’s highlights was the Happy Walk Parade, where individuals with Down Syndrome, families, and supporters walked together while carrying colorful banners and posters to promote awareness and acceptance of Down Syndrome in the community. The NU Pep Squad also gave an energetic performance and cheers to show their support for the cause.

The event also featured a raffle draw, where participants had a chance to win exciting prizes. Special guest performances also entertained the audience throughout the event.

The Happy Walk Showdown was another highlight of the event, where participants showcased their talents and skills in various categories such as singing, dancing, and acting. The winners of the showdown received awards, along with the raffle draw winners.

The event concluded with the presentation of the same-day edit video, featuring highlights of the event and the inspiring stories of individuals with Down Syndrome. The performance of Ronnie Lee’s “Natatanging Nilalang” was the perfect way to cap off the event, reminding everyone of the special qualities that make individuals with Down Syndrome unique and deserving of respect and support.

The Happy Walk for Down Syndrome is just one of SM Cares’ initiatives to promote inclusion and empower individuals with disabilities. Through events like Happy Walk, SM Cares and DSAPI continue to raise awareness, promote acceptance, and empower individuals with Down Syndrome and their families.
