LG Embraces Renewable Energy Transition by Joining RE100 Initiative

Accelerating Journey toward Carbon Neutrality, Company Continues Efforts to Realize ESG Vision of ‘Better Life for All’

In a significant step towards sustainability, LG Electronics (LG) has officially joined the RE100 (Renewable Energy 100) global initiative. This commitment underscores LG’s dedication to renewable energy adoption and its role as a responsible global corporate citizen.

As part of its membership in the RE100 initiative, LG has set a clear target to transition all its business sites to 100% renewable energy by 2050. The company has formulated a strategic roadmap that outlines progressive milestones, aiming to achieve 60% renewable energy usage by 2030, 90% by 2040, and ultimately reaching the goal of 100% renewable energy by 2050.

To accomplish this ambitious transition, LG will gradually increase its reliance on renewable sources like solar and wind power. The company plans to install high-efficiency solar panels across its offices and manufacturing facilities, expanding its renewable energy generation and consumption.

In addition to infrastructure upgrades, LG will employ various measures to support renewable energy adoption. These include acquiring renewable energy certificates (RECs), entering into renewable energy power purchase agreements (PPAs), and, in South Korea, paying Korea Electric Power Corporation’s (KEPCO) green premium.

As part of its ongoing efforts, LG has already made substantial progress in utilizing renewable energy. Last year, the company signed a direct PPA with GS EPS, a Korean power generation company, to construct a solar power station on the roof of LG Smart Park in Changwon, South Korea. The installation, equivalent to three soccer fields in size, is expected to be completed by 2025. Several LG offices worldwide have also implemented solar panel installations, including LG Sciencepark R&D complex in Seoul, South Korea, the North American Headquarters campus in New Jersey, USA, LG India’s office building in greater Noida, India, and the Rayong home appliance factory in Thailand.

By joining the RE100 initiative and outlining a comprehensive renewable energy transition plan, LG Electronics demonstrates its commitment to sustainable practices and takes significant strides towards mitigating environmental impact in the pursuit of a greener future.

LG Electronics has taken significant strides towards its commitment to renewable energy and carbon neutrality. By transitioning to renewable energy sources, the company is actively reducing its indirect carbon emissions (scope 2) associated with power usage. In 2019, LG announced its Zero Carbon 2030 pledge, aiming to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions (scope 1 and 2) by 2030.

Lee Sam-soo, Chief Strategy Officer at LG Electronics, stated, “Through continuous efforts and innovation, LG is making remarkable progress in its journey to 100 percent renewable energy and becoming a carbon-neutral business. LG remains fully committed to its ESG vision of creating a better life for all.”
