Get Involved in Ortigas Malls’ Monthly Sustainability Yard Sale Campaign

Ortigas Malls brings a delightful twist to upcycling, making it an enjoyable and sustainable experience! Discover the joy of buying, selling, and donating preloved items at the Sustainability Yard Sale event, which takes place every second Sunday of the month at both Greenhills and Estancia, from 8 am to 2 pm.

At the heart of the circular economy in the Philippines is the endeavor to foster awareness and inspire individuals to engage in recycling, upcycling, and other eco-conscious practices they can incorporate into their daily routines.

Upcycling is an art form that involves reimagining the potential of items that have outlived their initial purpose. Instead of discarding used or unwanted materials, upcycling enthusiasts and artists perceive fresh opportunities for reinvention. In the hands of these creative innovators, old furniture, containers, textiles, glassware, and even electronic components can be transformed into remarkable and functional pieces of art.

It’s not just about sustainability; it’s a channel for art and home aficionados to express themselves. Each piece narrates a tale of transformation as everyday objects are turned from ordinary into extraordinary, granting them a new purpose and a unique appearance, leading to one-of-a-kind creations.

Aireen Cruz, the organizer of Yard Sale, emphasizes, “The event champions the reduction of plastic materials that significantly impact the environment. It also encourages individuals, organizations, and institutions to amplify their environmental advocacy. It provides a convenient avenue for organizations and other institutions to raise funds through the recycling of ‘junk’ and the showcasing and sale of their upcycled products.”

“The Ortigas Malls Yard Sale is exceptional in that it brings together buyers and sellers in a single event where they can exhibit their creations and turn them into cash. It optimally utilizes Ortigas Malls’ multipurpose spaces in Greenhills and Estancia,” adds Arch. Renee Bacani, VP of Ortigas Malls.

The Yard Sale attracts various participants, including NGOs, local government unit (LGU) barangays, and schools, on every second Sunday of the month. Buyers include Envirocycle, a comprehensive e-waste recycling company dedicated to reducing electronic equipment disposal in landfills, as well as the environmental organization Philippine Advocates for the Care of the Planet, Inc. (PACOPI).

Sellers represent communities from Addition Hills, Wack Wack, Batis, and Pasadena, as well as institutions like La Salle Greenhills, La Salle Greenhills Alternative Education, and BJMP Dorms. Exhibitors from organizations such as KILUS Foundation, KILOS, Akbayanihan Eco Store, RVM, RCAM, all share a commitment to environmental protection through recycling and upcycling practices.

Aireen further explains, “The Greenhills Yard Sale focuses on waste reduction and the transformation of items into cash or something useful. This event aligns with Ortigas Malls’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment to promote environmental care and sustainable practices that benefit everyone.”

Shoppers stand a chance to win raffle prizes from Yard Sale partners. A Zumba session will kick off the morning with a burst of energy for participants and visitors, while the first 100 customers to register onsite will receive complimentary coffee and pandesal.

Whether you wish to display your upcycling skills or discover hidden treasures among the sellers at the Greenhills Yard Sale, you can be a part of the circular economy. Additionally, don’t forget to explore the Yard Sale at Estancia, Pasig City, which commenced on August 13. Mark your calendars for the next Yard Sale on October 8, 2023.
