Enhancing the Commuting Experience: LRT1 Introduces beep™-powered QR Payment

AF Payments, Inc., the company behind the beep card, is excited to announce the successful launch of the QR payment system in LRT1 in collaboration with Maya’s and Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC). This new and convenient payment option, powered by beep technology, has been warmly welcomed by train commuters. They can now effortlessly purchase QR codes using their smartphones, adding to the array of payment options available.

The rapid adoption of QR technology since its introduction reflects commuters’ eagerness to embrace diverse payment methods that enhance the speed and convenience of their daily commute. In addition to the traditional tap-in and tap-out functionality of beep cards, the QR payment option provides an excellent alternative for Single Journey Ticket users, enabling them to bypass queues and enjoy faster travel times.

AF Payments, Inc. remains committed to its core mission of providing commuters with convenient, fast, and secure payment solutions. By transforming the daily commuting experience into a more efficient, productive, and enjoyable one, the company strives to meet the needs and preferences of commuters, making their journeys smoother and more seamless.

JJ Moreno, the President & CEO of AF Payments, Inc., expresses his enthusiasm, stating, “The overwhelming adoption of QR since its launch demonstrates commuters’ willingness to embrace more diverse payment options that facilitate faster and more convenient commuting. Alongside the tap-in and tap-out functionality of beep cards, QR offers an excellent alternative to Single Journey Ticket users, allowing them to skip the lines and enjoy faster travel times. The core mission of AF Payments, Inc. is to provide commuters with convenient, fast, and secure payment solutions, transforming daily commuting into a more efficient, productive, and pleasant experience for everyone.”

With the introduction of the QR payment system powered by beep, commuting in LRT1 has become more seamless and hassle-free. AF Payments, Inc. continues to innovate and evolve, aiming to meet the ever-changing needs of commuters and enhance their overall journey experience.

Making payments via QR is made incredibly simple through following these steps:

1.     Open your Maya app and navigate to the Services section.

2.     Select the LRT-1 tile under the Lifestyle category.

3.     Choose your desired route (Northbound or Southbound) and set both the origin and destination.

4.     Click on Pay Now. Your QR ticket will be instantly generated.

5.     Scan your QR ticket using the turnstile QR scanners at LRT1 stations.

LRT1 introduces QR tickets, valid for 24 hours, which can be easily purchased through the Maya and LRMC’s ikotMNL apps, with future availability on the beep app.

The LRT1 train system serves passengers traveling from Monumento to Baclaran. Convenient “fast lane” turnstiles equipped with QR readers can be found at all LRT1 stations, including Balintawak and Roosevelt stations along EDSA.

AF Payments reaffirms its commitment to providing innovative enabling technologies that enhance the commuting experience of Filipinos. According to Mr. Moreno, “Filipino commuters deserve nothing less than the best and latest micropayment solutions that cater to their evolving needs.”

The recently launched QR ticketing system in LRT1 is based on the QR Code Application for Transport (QCAT) format, an open-source set of specifications and documents published by AFPI. QCAT defines the structure and format of the QR code payload of a ticket, which can be generated and issued through a mobile application. The QR ticket is then scanned and validated as trip fare media or ticket. All QR ticket transactions are captured and processed through a backend repository, following agreed-upon business rules between the QR ticket issuer, acceptor, and transport operator.

Before its implementation in the rail sector, QCAT proved successful in bus transport (specifically with the BGC Bus network in Taguig) and inter-island ferry terminals (in partnership with Topline Express Ferry in Cebu). In both cases, the manually validated paper ticketing process was replaced, ensuring quicker validation and a hassle-free commuting experience.

QR ticketing, based on the QCAT format, provides passengers with an additional cashless option for fast, seamless, and convenient commuting without the need for physical tickets.
