Digido Finance Corp. Volunteers Foster Coastal Resilience and Biodiversity

The mangrove area in Barangay Camachile serves as the primary source of livelihood for Samahan Ugnayan sa Pangisdaan ng Orion, Bataan (SUGPO)

Digido Finance Corp. (DFC), the operator of the multi-awarded fintech platforms Digido and UnaCash, recently spearheaded an environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiative in Bataan, focusing on coastal resilience and biodiversity restoration. During this activity, the employees and management of DFC, in collaboration with the Nature Awareness and Conservation Club, Inc., planted 1,161 mangroves in Barangay Camachile, Orion.

Over 30 volunteers from DFC participated in the event, planting seedlings and propagules of various mangrove species, including bakauan-lalaki (Rhizophora apiculata), bakauan-babae (Rhizophora mucronata), Bungalon (Avicennia marina), and Pagatpat (Sonneratia alba).

The mangrove area in Barangay Camachile holds significant importance as it serves as a vital source of livelihood for Samahan Ugnayan sa Pangisdaan ng Orion, Bataan (SUGPO), an association of village-level fishers organizations.

DFC received support from trusted partners such as Dragonpay and Macrokiosk, who contributed to the event through various means. Additionally, prior to the activity, DFC organized creative fundraising efforts internally to increase the number of mangroves for planting.

Mangroves play a crucial role in disaster risk reduction, aiding in flood mitigation, storm surge reduction, and coastal community protection. Moreover, studies highlight mangrove forests’ ability to sequester carbon, making them an effective solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change.

Diane Tinoko, Head of Human Resources and Administration at Digido Finance Corp., emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, “The company recognized the importance of mangrove rehabilitation and restoration in mitigating the effects of extreme weather events in the Philippines. We are grateful to our staff and trusted partners for their dedication to making our communities more sustainable.”

This initiative is part of DFC’s ongoing series of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) activities, aimed at improving community well-being and promoting sustainability.
