Unveiling Shadows: ‘Senorita 89’ Exposes Beauty Pageant Secrets in 1980

In the thrilling telenovela’s second season, the 90s are in full swing, and the search for a new Miss Mexico is dirtier than ever.

After a gripping debut season, the captivating Mexican telenovela Senorita 89 returns to unveil more clandestine truths from the realm of beauty pageants. Following Isabel’s (Natasha Dupeyrón) triumph as queen in Season 1 and the downfall of Concepcion’s (Ilse Salas) opulent La Encantada dynasty, Season 2 transports viewers to the 90s, delving into the rivalry between Mexico’s two major television networks in their quest to crown the next queen. Yet, as Isabel fights tenaciously to retain her crown, the emergence of a new contender threatens to dismantle her achievements and strip away everything she holds dear.

Season 2 introduces new recurring characters, such as Dolores Heredia (El Galán) as La Madrina, the matriarch of the cartels, and Yoshira Escárrega (Toda La Sangre) as Maribel Montaño, also known as La Santa. Senorita 89’s gripping narrative remains a compelling watch for aficionados of political thrillers, persistently tackling pertinent issues like misogyny, beauty standards, and the objectification of women, all while showcasing the strength of female solidarity, the resilience of spirit, and the imperative of challenging societal norms.

Talking about what Season 2 will bring, series showrunner and creator Lucia Puenzo told Deadline: “Following the phenomenal reception of the initial season, both within Mexico and globally, it was an immense pleasure to receive confirmation of a second season.” Puenzo elaborates, “In Season 2, our protagonists realize that forgiveness or permission yield nothing. They are poised to shatter all boundaries, borders, and privileges, dismantling once and for all the stereotypes dictating that only princesses merit existence.”
