Science of surveys comes into focus at 20th Jaime V. Ongpin Annual Memorial Lecture

Dr. Jose Ramon Albert, Ph.D., Professional Statistician and Senior Research Fellow of the Philippine Institute for Development Studies, is set to deliver the 20th Jaime V. Ongpin Annual Memorial Lecture on Public Service in Business and Government of the Ateneo de Manila University on October 27, 9 AM.

His lecture, entitled “Survey Says or Not?” will be held on Zoom and will be live-streamed on Ateneo’s Facebook and YouTube accounts. It will delve into survey practice and the science behind it. The lecture promises to be especially interesting and increasingly relevant especially when looking at the prism of the nearing 2022 National Election.

After the discussion, there will be an open forum discussion with a venerable panel of reactors including, Mr. Tomas Africa, former Administrator of the National Statistics Office now called the Philippine Statistics Authority; Nicco de Jesus, Director and Head of Advanced Analytics at Manulife; and, Dr. Zita Albacea, Ph.D., Professor at the Institute of Statistics of the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

The 20th Jaime V. Ongpin Annual Memorial Lecture on Public Service in Business and Government was first held in 2001 with Professor Randolf David delivering the inaugural lecture. The memorial lecture was launched to raise the awareness of Filipinos about important issues surrounding national development so that they can play a more active role in nation-building.

Over the past years, business leaders, academics, and senior government officials have delivered the Jaime V. Ongpin Memorial Lecture about critical matters that directly impact our democracy and our country’s development. Past discussions covered issues like climate change, corruption, education, federalism, globalization, health inequity, poverty, and national leadership.

The Jaime V. Ongpin Annual Memorial Lecture is funded by the Jaime V. Ongpin Center for Business and Government and the Ateneo School of Government together with the Office of University Development. The lecture is made possible with the assistance of the University Marketing and Communication Office and the Information Technology Resource Management Office.
