PPO Concert II - Elegance - POSTER

With refined artistry and grace, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) continues its 42nd concert season, Modulatio, with CONCERT II: ELEGANCE, on October 16, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. at Manila’s historic Metropolitan Theater.

Under the baton of renowned Maestro Grzegorz Nowak, the PPO breathes new life into timeless compositions by Filipino conductor Redentor Romero, German-British Baroque composer George Frideric Handel, and Polish composer Zygmunt Noskowski, bringing renewed elegance and sophistication to the concert hall.

The second installment of the concert series also features Filipino classical pedal harpist Vien Ignacio, whose exceptional artistry promises a world-class musical experience.

A repertoire evoking the warmth of home

The PPO opens the evening with the heartwarming nostalgia of Romero’s Philippine Portraits. Inspired by the composer’s profound love for his homeland, the work beautifully intertwines iconic Filipino romantic melodies into a rich and expressive symphonic tapestry.

Remembered as a pioneering Filipino conductor who made his mark on the international music scene, Romero devoted his craft to championing local talent. His Philippine Portraits remains a lasting tribute to the Filipino spirit, celebrating the country’s musical identity and cultural heritage.

The concert then transitions to the enchanting melodies of Handel’s Harp Concerto in B-flat Major, Op. 4, No. 6 (HWV 294), with guest soloist Ignacio joining the PPO to fill the hall with the harp’s delicate and exquisite sound.

First performed in February 1736 as part of Handel’s ode Alexander’s Feast, written in honor of Saint Cecilia, the composition highlights the harp’s graceful musical character. Its delicate melodies and bright, soothing tones create a serene atmosphere, evoking the comfort and familiarity of home.

From discovering the pedal harp at just three and a half years old to earning prestigious international accolades, 14-year-old prodigy Ignacio has charted an extraordinary musical journey. Trained under renowned musician Olga Shevelevich, she has performed on stages both in the Philippines and abroad, proudly representing the country through her artistry.

Ignacio’s exceptional musical achievements were further recognized at the 2025 Scandinavian International Instrument Music Competition, where she won First Place in the harp division and received special diplomas for Best Performance of a Romantic Piece and the Child Prodigy award.

Shifting from quiet reflection to the sweeping grandeur of a symphonic poem, PPO Concert II: Elegance concludes with Noskowski’s The Steppe, Op. 66. Composed in 1896, the work reflects the composer’s deep patriotism during a period when Poland had lost its sovereignty.

Inspired by the expansive plains of his homeland, Noskowski created a musical portrait of the landscape’s quiet beauty, solitude, and untamed freedom. The composition pays tribute to the enduring spirit of his nation, bringing the evening to a powerful and soaring conclusion.

The perfect haven for pure musical elegance

Bringing together distinct musical landscapes through a timeless repertoire, PPO Concert II: Elegance offers a captivating showcase of orchestral brilliance. The orchestra continues to elevate the local concert experience, inviting audiences into an evening of sophisticated artistry and emotional depth as it breathes new life into celebrated masterworks.

Building on the success of the season’s opening concert, PPO Concert II: Elegance promises to surround audiences with comfort, nostalgia, and musical beauty. The performance reaffirms the transformative power of great music to inspire, encourage quiet reflection, and leave a lasting impression.
