A song spanning many years to complete, finally makes its moment
Fresh from the renewed success of his solo catalog—highlighted by the enduring hit “Your Universe” recently breaking into Spotify Philippines’ Top 10—Rico Blanco returns with his most personal release yet: “Paalam.”
The hauntingly spare yet exquisitely layered ballad captures the lasting imprint of goodbyes in all their bittersweet shades. At once a love song and a meditation on loss, “Paalam” reflects on the many ways we part—whether from a loved one, a cherished chapter, a familiar place, or even a former version of ourselves. In Blanco’s interpretation, farewell is not just an ending but also a reawakening—an act that carries the gifts of clarity, grounding, and ultimately, healing.
“Out of all the songs I’ve released, Paalam is the song that took me the longest to finish,” Blanco admits. “Some songs I finish in minutes, days, or weeks, but this one has been a work in progress for many, many years.”
The song’s origins date back to the ‘90s, when Blanco was moved by the departure of a former bandmate. Over the decades, it transformed, gathering deeper resonance through his lived experiences—including the heartbreaking loss of his brother. For years, he believed another artist might be destined to sing it. “All these years, I kept waiting for the right singer to come along,” he shares.
Yet as the song evolved, so did its sense of inevitability. With its kundiman-inspired arrangements and sweeping orchestral builds, “Paalam” seemed to call Blanco home to his own voice, drawing from something deeply personal without ever fully revealing the story behind it.
“Production-wise, I always knew how I wanted the song to sound,” Rico explains. “I wanted it to have a timeless arrangement, or some would say a bit traditional. Something that could live on beyond trends.”
What emerged is a track that feels both intimate and universal—a song that acknowledges pain but offers grace, inviting listeners to embrace goodbyes as moments of strength and transformation.
