Instituto Cervantes de Manila will present «¿Por qué pervive la Leyenda Negra? Tres mitos» (Why does the Black Legend still exist? Three myths), a Spanish-language talk that will examine enduring misconceptions surrounding Spain’s historical presence in the Philippines.
The lecture will be delivered by anthropologist Fernando Zialcita as part of “Charlas de la Academia,” a lecture series presented by the Academia Filipina de la Lengua Española. Founded in 1924, the institution is dedicated to promoting the use and appreciation of the Spanish language in the Philippines.
The lecture series, which explores different aspects of the Spanish heritage in the Philippines, forms part of the Academia’s continuing initiatives to encourage greater understanding of the country’s historical and linguistic ties to Spain.
Reexamining Three Persistent Myths
In «¿Por qué pervive la Leyenda Negra? Tres mitos», Zialcita will examine three myths surrounding Spanish history in the Philippines and offer a fresh perspective on misconceptions that, according to the professor, continue to persist in discussions about the country’s Spanish colonial past.
Rather than simply revisiting established narratives, the talk aims to encourage audiences to look more closely at how historical perceptions are formed, remembered, and passed on across generations.
An Expert on Filipino Identity and Heritage
Leading the discussion is Fernando Zialcita, a member of the Academia Filipina de la Lengua Española and professor emeritus of Anthropology at Ateneo de Manila University.
A distinguished academic, Zialcita is recognized for his research on Filipino identity, as well as his work in the preservation and conservation of Filipino architectural and cultural heritage. His academic work has contributed to a deeper understanding of the cultural forces that have shaped Philippine society and identity.
