AirAsia Philippines Reaffirms Onboard Smoking and Vaping Ban

AirAsia Philippines is doubling down on its reminder to guests: smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited on all flights. The airline issued the strong advisory after recording several incidents this year of passengers violating the rule.

From January to August 2025 alone, AirAsia’s Security Department documented 10 separate cases of guests caught vaping mid-flight—either inside lavatories, triggering smoke detectors, or openly using devices at their seats.

Such actions not only breach AirAsia Philippines’ policies but also violate national laws:

  • Republic Act No. 9211 (Tobacco Regulation Act)
  • Republic Act No. 11900 (Vape Regulation Act)

Both prohibit smoking and vaping in public transportation, including aircraft.

Passengers caught in violation face serious consequences upon arrival at their destination, including:

  • Immediate referral to airport police and blotter entry
  • Possible fines of up to ₱5,000, depending on the offense
  • Additional charges under the Civil Aviation Authority Act (RA 9497) if flight safety is compromised
  • Administrative sanctions from AirAsia Philippines, which may include a lifetime ban from flying with the airline

“At AirAsia, every flight is anchored on safety, ensuring our guests get to their destination safely and conveniently. Triggering a smoke detector can cause panic, disrupt operations, and malfunctioning devices may pose risk inside the cabin. While our team is highly trained to handle these situations, we rely on our guests’ cooperation to ensure safety is never compromised,”
said First Officer Steve F. Dailisan, AirAsia Philippines Head of Communications and Corporate Affairs.

To strengthen compliance, AirAsia enforces a visible, consistent no-smoking policy starting at the boarding gate and continuing throughout the cabin. Guests are reminded via:

  • Notices printed on boarding passes
  • Clear pre-flight announcements
  • Prominent illuminated signage during the flight

All lavatories are fitted with tamper-proof smoke detectors, and cabin crew remain vigilant to ensure immediate action against violators.

With these measures, AirAsia Philippines underscores its commitment to maintaining a safe, secure, and comfortable travel experience for all its guests.
