AirAsia Philippines has issued a stern reminder to travelers to watch their words and actions both inside terminals and during flights. The airline reported a concerning uptick in bomb joke incidents, warning that these reckless remarks disrupt airline operations and immediately trigger strict, mandatory airport security protocols.

Data from AirAsia Philippines Security Operations reveals that bomb joke occurrences have more than doubled this year. As of October 2026, the low-cost carrier has logged five distinct incidents—a sharp contrast to the two cases reported throughout the entirety of 2025. Security officials noted that these disruptions took place across multiple stages of travel, specifically at check-in desks, boarding gates, and even inside the airplane cabin right before takeoff.
Regardless of intent, any mention of explosives or explosive devices is strictly treated as a major security threat. When a traveler makes these claims, airlines must immediately initiate mandatory security protocols—including full physical screenings of the passenger and their luggage—which frequently leads to disruptive flight delays.
Passengers who make bomb-related comments face immediate and severe repercussions. Depending on the gravity of the situation, the airline can deny them boarding or remove them from the aircraft before handing them over to the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP-AVSEGROUP). Furthermore, following a formal case review, offenders risk being permanently blacklisted from flying with AirAsia Philippines.
“Our operations have always been anchored in keeping operational reliability and safety. However, any perceived risk necessitates rigorous compliance measures that impact the entire passenger experience as well as the airline’s operational efficiency. Previous incidents serve as a reminder for guests to continuously learn and remain committed to keeping every flight safe and comfortable for everyone,” AirAsia Philippines President & General Manager Anna Victoria Lu shares.

Travelers are encouraged to:
- Remember that there is no safe zone for making reckless security claims. Airport and airline staff take all explosive-related statements seriously, whether they occur at check-in, during mandatory screening, at the gate, or mid-flight.
- Never joke about explosives. Any remark suggesting that a passenger or their baggage contains a bomb will be treated as an immediate security breach, regardless of intent.
- Report security concerns instantly. Any threatening statements or suspicious baggage should be reported right away to airline staff, cabin crew, or airport law enforcement.
- Comply with security protocols. Always cooperate with airport checkpoints and follow all directives given by airline crews and security officers.
Under Presidential Decree No. 1727, also known as the Anti-Bomb Joke Law, individuals who intentionally communicate false information regarding destructive devices face criminal prosecution. Upon conviction, violators may be sentenced to up to five years in prison, fined up to PHP 40,000, or both, at the discretion of the court.
