After missing the podium in the floor exercise, the two-time Olympic champion turns his attention to another medal opportunity at the 2026 World Championships.

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands — Filipino gymnastics star Carlos Edriel Yulo finished eighth in the men’s floor exercise final at the 2026 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships on October 24, scoring 13.233 points.

The result came after a strong qualifying performance, in which Yulo placed second with 14.500 points. However, a fall during his final routine affected his score and ended his bid for a floor exercise medal.

American gymnast Frederick Richard won gold with 14.633 points, followed by Great Britain’s Jake Jarman with 14.600 and Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat with 14.466.

Vault final: Yulo’s next opportunity

Yulo’s campaign in Rotterdam continues with the men’s vault final on October 25. He qualified sixth in the event with an average score of 14.266 points.

The final is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Philippine time, equivalent to 2:00 p.m. in Rotterdam.

Unlike the floor exercise, where his final routine prevented him from reaching the podium, vault gives Yulo another opportunity to contend for a medal. He won Olympic gold in the apparatus at the 2024 Paris Games, alongside his floor exercise title.

His previous success makes him a competitor to watch, although qualification standings and past achievements do not guarantee a podium finish.

At 26, Yulo remains one of the Philippines’ most accomplished gymnasts, with two Olympic gold medals and a history of success on the international stage.

COMMENTARY | Beyond the scoreboard

An eighth-place finish is not the outcome Filipino fans wanted, particularly after Yulo’s second-place qualification. But elite gymnastics demands precision, and even a single mistake can change the standings.

The result deserves honest acknowledgment without diminishing what Yulo has accomplished for Philippine sports. His Olympic victories remain historic, regardless of how this particular final unfolded.

Now, the focus shifts to vault.

Yulo has a fresh opportunity to compete for a medal on an apparatus where he has already reached the Olympic summit. The challenge is to recover from the floor final, concentrate on the next routine, and deliver his best performance.

There is no guarantee of victory—and that is precisely what makes sport compelling.

As fans, we can hope for another podium finish while respecting the demands of competition and whatever result follows.

The floor final is behind him. The vault is the next test. And the Philippines will be watching.
