Apple’s latest product launch at its recent “Surprise and Shine” event has triggered strong reactions from influencers on X, with much of the discussion focusing not only on the price of the new iPhone Duo, but also on simultaneous price increases across older and mainstream iPhone models.
According to GlobalData, a leading intelligence and productivity platform, influencers interpreted the pricing changes as a sign that Apple may be resetting the pricing structure across its broader iPhone portfolio. Many viewed the Duo launch as an opportunity for Apple to use a highly anticipated new form factor to support higher pricing across its lineup, protect margins, and encourage consumers to move toward higher-value models.
Influencers See Pricing as a Broader Portfolio Strategy
Shreyasee Majumder, Social Media Analyst at GlobalData, said the reaction from influencers largely focused on Apple’s pricing strategy at the portfolio level rather than treating the changes as simply a launch-day detail.
“Influencers largely treated Apple’s pricing decisions as a portfolio-level strategy rather than a launch-day detail. The reaction suggests many believe Apple is using the iPhone Duo to stretch premium pricing across the lineup, expand average selling prices, and capture more value from existing customers instead of chasing volume growth at the lower end.”
She added that discussions around higher memory costs, margin protection, and encouraging buyers toward Pro-tier devices suggest influencers view the move as a financially disciplined strategy as much as a product decision.
“However, influencers also raised the risk that if the company pushes too far, especially in price-sensitive markets, it could lengthen replacement cycles or turn the Duo into more of a halo product than a volume driver,” Majumder said.
GlobalData’s Social Media Analytics Platform captured several notable reactions from influencers following the launch.
Gene Munster: Duo Could Account for 10% of iPhone Revenue
Gene Munster, Managing Partner at Deepwater Asset Management, expressed enthusiasm for the new foldable design while acknowledging the potential impact of its price.
“The new foldable iPhone Duo is sick. No seam. Ultra thin. 50% larger screen than Pro Max. My take: They’re going to sell more than I thought before seeing it. I was thinking it would account for 5% of iPhone revenue in FY27. Now I think likely going to be 10%. The issue is the price. We don’t have it yet, but it will be $2k plus. $AAPL”
Finance Lancelot: Questions Whether Apple Is Repeating Past Mistakes
Financial expert Finance Lancelot took a more critical view of the pricing strategy, comparing the Duo with Apple’s previous premium hardware launches.
“Apple is making the exact same mistake they made with the Vision Pro. $AAPL DUO is targeting a niche market of foldable phones & charging an insane price of $1,900+ They haven’t learned anything from Sony’s mistakes or their own failures. Zero innovation”
Matthew Keys: Focus on Price Increases Across Older iPhones
Matthew Keys, Owner at Solano Media LLC, focused on Apple’s decision to raise prices on older iPhone models following the company’s latest results.
“In July, Apple said it received tariff refunds that helped its third quarter (Q3) earnings, with overall revenue of $109 billion. Instead of refunding customers, Apple hiked the prices of its older-model iPhones by $100 on Wednesday. $AAPL”
Ross Gerber: Is $2,000 the New $1,000?
Ross Gerber, CEO and CIO at Gerber Kawasaki, described the general reaction to the Apple event as positive while questioning the normalization of ultra-premium smartphone pricing.
“Generally a good vibe in the HQ today watching the Apple event. $2k for a new foldable phone. I liked the new phone but is ‘$2k the new $1k’? (Thanks Brett) $AAPL”
Gul Vasikova: Premium Pricing Depends on Real Differentiation
Gul Vasikova, Researcher and Consultant in the AI tech industry, pointed to Apple’s potential strategy of moving consumers further up the pricing ladder.
“….Apple has one potential solution: move consumers further up the pricing ladder. The rumored ultra-premium foldable iPhone, potentially priced around $2,200–$2,500, could allow Apple to increase its average selling price without raising the price of every model by the same amount.”
However, Vasikova noted that such a strategy depends on consumers seeing meaningful differentiation in the new form factor.
“If the foldable feels like a true new generation of iPhone, Apple may have another major premium category. If it feels more like an expensive gimmick, the market could push back quickly….”
Ramakrushna Mohapatra: iPhone Prices Rise in India
Ramakrushna Mohapatra, Founding Member at AccordWorks, highlighted the scale of Apple’s price increases in India following the latest iPhone launch.
“Apple just made iPhones significantly more expensive in India iPhone 17 has jumped from ₹82,900 to ₹99,900 for the 256GB model. It’s around a 20% hike. Apple has raised prices across multiple models following its latest iPhone launch, including the iPhone 16, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air”
A New Chapter for Apple’s Pricing Strategy
The reactions captured by GlobalData illustrate how the iPhone Duo launch is being viewed beyond the appeal of its new form factor.
While some influencers focused on the device’s design and potential to expand Apple’s premium category, others zeroed in on pricing, margins, affordability, and the broader increases across Apple’s existing portfolio.
The discussion also highlights a key question surrounding Apple’s premium strategy: whether consumers will continue moving toward increasingly expensive devices when new hardware introduces a sufficiently differentiated experience.
As Apple expands its iPhone lineup, the company’s latest pricing decisions are generating discussion not only about the Duo itself, but about how the entire iPhone portfolio may be positioned in the premium smartphone market.
