Moneygurado Campus Talks - Metrobank Brand Development Officer_Justine Nycole Abad

With social media algorithms increasingly shaping what young Filipinos see, want, and ultimately buy, Metrobank is encouraging students to become more mindful not only of their money but also of the content influencing their financial behavior.

Justine Nycole Abad, Metrobank Brand Development Officer, discusses financial mindfulness, scam awareness, and the influence of social media on money decisions as she introduces students to Earnest, Metrobank’s online financial guide, during the Moneygurado Campus Series at CEU Manila.

The bank recently brought its Moneygurado Campus Series to Centro Escolar University (CEU) Manila for its second leg, gathering more than 100 students for an open discussion on money management, financial habits, scam awareness, and the growing influence of social media on everyday spending decisions.

When the Feed Influences the Wallet

During the session, students openly shared how personalized social media content and algorithm-driven recommendations can influence what they purchase.

“Sometimes you’re just thinking about an item, and it’s already there on your feed,” one student said, capturing a familiar experience for many young consumers navigating today’s highly personalized digital environment.

For Metrobank, understanding these influences is an important part of building better financial habits. In an increasingly digital lifestyle, financial challenges often begin with emotional and social pressures long before they become budgeting problems.

“Money decisions are emotional before they are mathematical. They start with FOMO (fear of missing out), pakikisama, hiya, and utang na loob. Every scroll on your phone now comes with a suggestion to spend, but not every piece of content should end with a checkout button. Some should leave you financially mindful,” Metrobank shared during the session.

The message is especially relevant to a generation constantly exposed to shopping recommendations, influencer content, viral trends, and personalized advertisements. Learning to recognize what drives a purchase can be just as important as knowing how to create a budget.

Making Financial Education More Social

To help young Filipinos navigate the financial pressures of the digital age, Metrobank introduced Earnest (@earnestph), a financial educator on TikTok and Instagram designed to make financial lessons more relatable and accessible.

Through easy-to-understand and engaging content, Earnest serves as a financial guide that explains everyday money concepts, encourages critical thinking, and empowers users to make more informed financial decisions.

Its content covers practical topics including budgeting, saving, debt management, scam awareness, investing, and responsible spending—delivering financial education in formats designed for today’s social media generation.

The discussion also highlighted the growing need for credible financial voices online, particularly at a time when financial advice is readily available but not always accurate or reliable.

“It’s important that banks are on social media because that’s where students like us are,” one participant shared, underscoring the importance of trusted financial institutions meeting young people on the platforms where they already spend much of their time.

Students likewise recognized that financial education goes beyond the classroom. Access to credible and practical information can help young consumers resist impulsive spending, develop healthier financial habits, and make smarter decisions with long-term goals in mind.

Understanding the Filipino Side of Money

As part of the program, Metrobank also introduced students to the broader Moneygurado campaign through the third episode of its Moneygurado docuseries, The Price of Hiya.

Featuring historian Prof. Xiao Chua, the episode examines how Filipino cultural values and social expectations influence the way people talk about money, deal with financial challenges, and make financial decisions.

By exploring the cultural factors behind financial behavior, the docuseries encourages more open and meaningful conversations about money while reinforcing the idea that financial resilience starts with informed choices, healthy habits, and access to trustworthy guidance.

Building Financial Resilience, One Choice at a Time

The Moneygurado Campus Series forms part of Metrobank’s continuing commitment to making financial education more accessible, relevant, and actionable for the next generation.

By bringing financial conversations directly into schools and complementing face-to-face discussions with digital learning platforms, Metrobank aims to equip more young Filipinos with the knowledge, confidence, and mindset to make informed financial decisions and build lasting financial resilience.

In a world where algorithms increasingly influence what people see and spend on, financial mindfulness may begin with something as simple as taking control of the content that shapes everyday choices.

After all, in a world driven by algorithms, financial mindfulness starts with learning to train your feed before it trains you.
