1 Million Trees for Mindoro & CamNorte Wovoka x GCash GForest

In a major step toward restoring the Philippines’ natural ecosystems, Wovoka Philippines, a climate technology project development company, and GForest, the environmental sustainability initiative of GCash, have signed a landmark Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to plant more than one million native trees and mangrove species over the next five years.

The ambitious reforestation and coastal restoration program, which will run from 2026 to 2030, will focus on vulnerable forest and coastal communities in Oriental Mindoro and Camarines Norte, reinforcing both organizations’ shared commitment to environmental stewardship and nation-building in celebration of Philippine Arbor Day.

Restoring Nature, Strengthening Communities

As climate change continues to intensify the impacts of deforestation and coastal degradation, many Philippine communities face increasing threats from flooding, storm surges, biodiversity loss, and declining natural resources that sustain local livelihoods.

Recognizing these challenges, Wovoka Philippines and GCash are investing in science-based ecosystem restoration as a long-term, nature-based solution that complements broader climate mitigation and adaptation efforts.

Through carefully planned restoration strategies and continuous environmental monitoring, the initiative aims to rehabilitate watersheds, strengthen coastal protection, restore biodiversity, reduce soil erosion, and improve the long-term ecological resilience of both provinces.

Technology Meets Climate Action

At the heart of the partnership is a technology-driven approach that makes environmental conservation accessible to millions of Filipinos.

Through GForest, GCash users can contribute to the restoration effort simply by going about their everyday digital transactions. By earning Green Energy Points, users can convert their accumulated points into real-world tree-planting initiatives, making climate action an effortless part of daily life.

The five-year program includes the planting of native tree and mangrove species across upland forests and coastal ecosystems, helping degraded landscapes recover while increasing their natural capacity to capture carbon and support wildlife.

“Through this tech-for-good partnership with Wovoka Philippines, we are utilizing the scale of GCash to build real-world ecological barriers and secure green livelihoods for the communities that need them most,” said Michelle Fernandez, General Manager for Sustainability and Corporate Communications of GCash.

Working alongside Wovoka Philippines also ensures that restoration activities follow rigorous ecological standards by planting only native, site-appropriate species that naturally thrive in local environments, promote biodiversity, and restore ecological balance.

Creating Sustainable Green Livelihoods

Beyond environmental restoration, the initiative is equally focused on empowering local communities.

Residents from participating forest and coastal areas will play a central role in planting, maintaining, and monitoring the newly established forests, transforming conservation efforts into sustainable sources of livelihood.

Community members will oversee tree survival, conduct regular site inspections, and help ensure the long-term success of restoration activities long after the initial planting phase.

The program also provides local farmers and coastal workers with stable income opportunities through year-round maintenance work, nursery operations, and site patrols, helping reduce seasonal income uncertainty while fostering long-term environmental stewardship.

A Blueprint for Sustainable Development

By combining digital innovation, environmental science, and grassroots participation, the GCash-Wovoka partnership demonstrates how technology can create meaningful, measurable climate impact beyond the digital space.

The initiative showcases how large-scale public participation can drive ecosystem restoration while simultaneously strengthening local economies and building climate resilience in vulnerable communities.

As more Filipinos embrace digital platforms for everyday transactions, this partnership illustrates how technology can become a powerful force for environmental protection—turning simple daily actions into lasting contributions toward a greener, more sustainable future for the Philippines.
