On her very first day at work in Hong Kong, 28-year-old Rhodora Alcaraz-Tuñacao was faced with a life-altering decision—one that would define her not just as an overseas worker, but as a true hero.

As flames tore through a residential building in Tai Po District, Tuñacao had a clear chance to escape. Instead, she chose to stay.
For more than eight harrowing hours, she remained inside a smoke-filled apartment on the 13th floor, shielding her employer’s three-month-old infant with her own body. With visibility fading and heat intensifying, she wrapped the child in a bedsheet to protect them from the thick smoke—holding on through exhaustion and repeatedly losing consciousness, only to wake and continue protecting the baby until rescuers finally arrived.
That act of courage has now earned her national recognition. Casino Plus, in partnership with the Alden Richards Foundation, has named Tuñacao the first recipient of the Hero for All award—honoring everyday Filipinos whose quiet acts of bravery leave a lasting impact.

An Ordinary Beginning, An Extraordinary Choice
Originally from San Pablo City, Laguna, Tuñacao’s story reflects the journey of many overseas Filipino workers—leaving home in pursuit of a better future for their families. On November 26, 2025, she had just arrived at her employer’s residence after a long journey from the airport when the fire broke out.
As the situation worsened, her employer urged her to escape through exterior scaffolding. But Tuñacao made a different choice—one rooted in instinct, compassion, and courage.
When rescuers finally reached them hours later, she carried the infant to safety before collapsing from exhaustion. Though she suffered no visible burns, she spent weeks in intensive care in Hong Kong due to smoke inhalation and continues to recover in the Philippines.
She is not a trained rescuer. Not a firefighter. Just someone who chose to act when it mattered most.
“Hindi ko inaakala na may kakayanan pala akong tumulong sa ganung sitwasyon,” she shared. “Pero nasa puso ko—kaya mong tumulong.”
