The spotlight shone brightly on global indie talent as the Indie Game Award 2026, hosted by Taipei Game Show, officially revealed this year’s winners — marking one of the most competitive editions in its 12-year history.

Leading the night was Japan’s TearyHand Studio and Roger, whose emotionally powerful title captured both the Grand Prix and Best Audio awards. The game drew widespread acclaim for its deeply affecting narrative and masterfully integrated soundtrack. Judges praised its refined controls and the seamless way music and storytelling intertwined to create a fully immersive experience. Several panelists admitted they were “moved to tears,” noting that the story lingers long after the credits roll — a rare achievement that defines truly exceptional interactive art.
A Record-Breaking Year for Indie Excellence
Presented in collaboration with PlayStation, this year’s awards attracted 515 entries from 51 countries and regions — a 1.5-fold increase from previous editions and the highest number of submissions in the program’s history. The surge in participation underscored the global momentum of the indie game scene and elevated the competition to unprecedented intensity.

The ceremony brought together an esteemed international jury, including Shuhei Yoshida (CEO of Yosp, Inc.), Daniel Robson (Executive Producer at IGN JAPAN), Jiyeon Kim (Editor-in-Chief of INVEN), Masahiko Murakami (CEO of BitSummit), Elicia Lee (Chairman of Indie Wavemakers), Rani Kim (BIC Festival representative), and LEE CHUN-I (Director of Experimental Game Lab, National Taiwan University of Arts). Seven winning teams from across the globe gathered in Taipei to celebrate their achievements alongside dozens of finalists and exhibitors.

Taiwanese developers made a strong impression this year.
FromDawn Games’ Aeruta secured Best Visual Art, blending action-adventure gameplay with simulation elements. Its Japanese-inspired aesthetic and expressive character design earned praise from judges, who described the game as “a joy to play.”
Meanwhile, Best Student Game went to Froggo’s Adventure: Drifting Sky by SmellyFrog. The charming pixel-art platformer invites players to explore a magical 2D world as an adventurous frog. With nostalgic chiptune music, clever environmental details, and irresistibly cute visuals, the game delivers a lighthearted yet polished experience that keeps players smiling.
Celebrating Innovation and Storytelling
The Best Narrative award was presented to The Berlin Apartment by Germany’s Blue Backpack. Through fragmented everyday objects, the game reconstructs memories tied to an aging apartment building, weaving together distinct stories that collectively revive a bygone era.
Belgium-based Beeswax Games earned Best Innovation for No Players Online, a haunting experience that recreates early computer interfaces. Players navigate puzzles within an old PC environment, gradually uncovering an unexpectedly expansive hidden story inside what appears to be a shooter game. Judges highlighted its unsettling atmosphere, remarking that “even when nothing is happening, it feels disturbing.”
From the United States, BALL x PIT by Kenny Sun & Friends took home Best Design. The game reinvents brick-breaking mechanics by fusing ball-combination systems, base-building, and roguelite progression, delivering fast-paced gameplay with endless procedural variety.
South Korea’s Concode won Best Mobile Game with Graytail, a mystery-driven adventure that follows a detective investigating mutants on a remote island. As players collect clues to unravel the disappearance of a mother, the game’s smooth narrative pacing and elegant visual style stood out to judges as hallmarks of a highly promising title.
