MMDA, Jollibee Group Launch Plastic Recycling Incentive

Metro Manila residents now have a new reason to recycle: collect plastic waste and earn rewards! The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has partnered with homegrown favorite Jollibee Foods Corporation to launch the Plastic Waste Recovery and Rewards Program, a community-driven initiative that incentivizes proper plastic segregation and collection with gift certificates.

Partnership for Plastic Recycling. The MMDA and the Jollibee Group have joined forces to promote plastic waste recycling among households in Metro Manila, signing a Memorandum of Agreement on November 13, 2025, at the MMDA office. Leading the signing are Atty. Romando Artes, MMDA Chair (2nd from left) and Joseph Tanbuntiong, Chief Executive Officer, Jollibee Group Philippines and Head, Jollibee Brand Global (2nd from right). They are flanked by USec. Procopio Lipana, MMDA General Manager (leftmost) and Atty. Raul Academia, Vice President, Public Affairs Head, Jollibee Group (rightmost).

Under the program, every seven kilograms of plastic collected can be exchanged for a P100 Jollibee gift certificate, empowering households and barangays to take an active role in managing waste while supporting a sustainable environment. Residents will start by segregating plastics at home and turning them in to barangay collection points, women’s groups, or community leaders. Points will be recorded in a Barangay Reward Card, and accumulated points can be redeemed for rewards.

MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes highlighted that this collaboration strengthens the shared commitment of the government and private sector to environmental stewardship, community engagement, and sustainable development. “This program promotes responsible solid waste management and inspires communities to protect our waterways while diverting waste from landfills,” he said during the ceremonial MOA signing at the MMDA headquarters in Pasig City.

Jollibee Group Philippines CEO Joseph Tanbuntiong echoed the importance of collective action. “Through our partnership with MMDA and recycling partner Greencycle, we’re ensuring that collected plastic is properly processed and recycled. This initiative brings cleaner waterways, safer neighborhoods, and a more sustainable future for Metro Manila.”

The program will initially cover 20 barangays in Vitas, Tondo, Manila, with plans to expand to 36 more barangays in Pasay and Makati. During the feasibility dry run in Vitas, the initiative successfully generated 1,059 kilograms of plastic waste from February 10 to March 31, 2025.

This initiative is part of MMDA’s ongoing Community-Based Solid Waste Management Program, complementing efforts under the Metro Manila Flood Management Project (MMFMP), and reflects the shared goal of sustainable development and stronger community participation in environmental protection.
