SeedWorks Philippines Takes Top Spot in the 15th NRTF with TH-82 Hybrid Rice Variety

SeedWorks Philippines’ TH-82 hybrid rice variety has once again demonstrated its potential as an ideal option for wet-season cropping by topping the 15th National Rice Technology Forum (NRTF). The national biannual rice derby, organized by the Department of Agriculture (DA) and other agencies, showcased 29 different hybrid and inbred rice varieties from 11 agriculture brands and companies across 120 hectares of technology demonstrations.

With the theme “Increase Rice Production towards Farmers’ Prosperity,” the three-day event in Barangay Cabaruan, Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, culminated from September 12 to 14, 2022. Local farmer Mario Galicinao used SeedWorks’ TH-82 and topped the rice derby with a yield of 8.63 tons per hectare, which is twice the Region I average and the national average. This demonstrates the outstanding feature of the hybrid rice variety to still bring productive yield even during the wet season. TH-82 also reclaimed the No. 1 rank in NRTF after it dominated the 4th NRTF in 2017 held in M’lang, Cotabato. The event aimed to demonstrate the latest agricultural technology for coping with climate change impact and the economic effects of the ongoing pandemic.

TH-82 Tatag Hybrid rice variety

SeedWorks Philippines’ TH-82 hybrid rice variety has been consistently demonstrating its ability to produce high-quality yields in any season, thanks to its hybrid seed vigor and robust root system. It has been successful in several demo farming programs throughout the country, making it an ideal choice for dry-seeding and direct-seeding in both wet and dry field conditions.

According to SeedWorks Philippines President Carlos Saplala, the company has always been committed to supporting local farmers by providing them with the best rice varieties that can produce greater yields even under highly stressed conditions. TH-82 is one such hybrid rice variety that can withstand major diseases and abiotic stress caused by climate change.

SeedWorks’ farming commitment

In addition to TH-82, SeedWorks Philippines is also promoting two other hybrid rice varieties – US-88 and Quadro Alas. US-88 is best suited for the central plains of Luzon and is known for its long grains and premium quality. On the other hand, Quadro Alas is gaining popularity among local farmers due to its early maturity (around 104 to 110 days after seeding) and high yield potential.

SeedWorks Philippines President Carlos Saplala emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting Filipino farmers in increasing rice production and generating higher income. By offering these high-quality hybrid rice varieties, SeedWorks aims to contribute to the country’s goal of achieving rice self-sufficiency and making rice more affordable.
