“Saving Our Seas” Initiative to Combat Plastic Pollution Launched by Century Tuna

The Philippines is home to one of the world’s most diverse marine biodiversity centers, but plastic pollution is threatening this valuable resource. In response, Century Tuna, the top canned tuna brand in the Philippines, has launched the “Saving Our Seas” initiative to draw attention to this pressing issue.

Through the “Saving Our Seas” initiative, Century Tuna intends to increase public awareness about the significance of marine conservation and emphasize the vital role that consumers can play in combating plastic pollution. The program aims to encourage consumers to become part of the solution to this critical issue.

Carlo Endaya, the Vice President and General Manager for Branded Tuna Business at Century Pacific Food Inc. (CPFI), stated, “Plastic pollution is one of the most critical environmental issues we face today. As part of our mission to give back to our planet and seas, Century Tuna is launching the ‘Saving Our Seas’ initiative to help combat plastic pollution, particularly in our Philippine Seas. Let’s make a significant impact on our beaches and continue to enjoy the marine resources we rely on.”

The initiative kicked off with a Beach and Reef Clean-up event in multiple areas of Mabini, Batangas. The event was attended by Century Tuna Ambassador Alden Richards, Superbods winners and finalists, and community volunteers.

Mr. Alden Richards, Century Tuna Ambassador, expressed his honor to be a part of the “Saving Our Seas” initiative and his complete support for the project. He believes that we are all interconnected with nature and that a healthy environment is essential to maintaining our health. He emphasized that it is our responsibility to safeguard and preserve our seas.

Century Tuna has partnered with HOPE’s Aling Tindera Waste-to-Cash Program for its “Saving Our Seas” initiative. This program encourages community members to collect their plastic waste and exchange it for cash. The initiative also promotes the idea of a Plastic Circular Economy, where collected and recycled plastics are diverted from nature and turned into something useful by processors. In 11 areas along the Mabini, Batangas shoreline, Aling Tindera waste bins have been deployed to facilitate the plastic waste collection process. The initiative aims to collect at least 10 metric tons of plastic waste during its pilot year.

Century Tuna has partnered with HOPE’s Aling Tindera Waste-to-Cash Program for its “Saving Our Seas” initiative, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of marine conservation and the role of consumers in fighting plastic pollution. The program promotes a Plastic Circular Economy by collecting and recycling plastics to prevent leakage into the environment. The initiative has deployed waste bins in 11 key areas along the shoreline of Mabini, Batangas, where people can drop their plastic waste and exchange it for cash. The goal for its pilot year is to collect at least 10 metric tons of plastic.

The initiative’s launch coincided with Earth Hour, the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, on March 25, 2023.
